Dan Brown's Digital Fortress is one of the best realistic fiction books I have ever read. Susan Fletcher, a brilliant cryptologist and mathematician, works for a secret government agency known as the NSA. For years, the NSA has been intercepting and reading people's personal emails without the knowledge of the public. Once the world finds out, a flood of new encryption software is created to combat the reading of personal email. In response, the NSA pumps billions of dollars into creating the most powerful code-breaking computer ever built, TRANSLTR. TRANSLTR breaks codes at amazing speeds and no code can withstand more than an hour within the code-breaking beast. This all changes one day when Susan Fletcher is called into work on a Saturday by Strathmore, the on-site commander of the NSA. Susan soon finds out why she has been called into work when the run monitor shows that a program has been inside TRANSLTR for over fifteen hours. They soon find out that a former employee, Ensei Tankado, claims to have created an unbreakable code that is currently running inside TRANSLTR. Tankado then blackmails the NSA with the code saying they must reveal TRANSLTR to the public or he will sell the code to the highest bidder. This book far exceeded my expectations and was a great page-turner. I could find no flaws with the story line or the characters making it a five-star book. The reader was able to get involved with the characters and become connected to the book and the story. The book is well deserving of a five-star rating and I would highly recommend this book to anyone that likes a good thriller or mystery book. Their is a lot of mystery intertwined with adventure in the book and it keeps you engaged wanting to know what will happen next.
