For our second episode we'll be discussing Heir to the Empire, the first book in the seminal Thrawn trilogy that effectively created the Star Wars EU back in 1991.

I've just started reading it myself and have come across some interesting details that I've forgotten about over the years.

One thing that became apparent as soon as they brought it up is the changes that the prequels brought to the Clone Wars. In this book they talk about the "cloners" fighting against the Republic as opposed to having the clones on the same side as we saw in eps 1 - 3.

Any other thoughts, observations, opinions or whatever, feel free to discuss!

I just finished it. Interested to know what you think of it after your second time through.

About halfway through! I'm MORE interested to hear what you thought as a first timer.

Scott Shadel | 4 comments Just finished my....oh man 3rd? 4th time through?

I love the HATE that Mara has for Luke. Wondering if Timothy ever imagined what would become of them. Also love the new worlds and creatures. And Talon Karde is just a nice character to have to bring back in the EU.

I do think the Noghri were under used. It was a very nice concept and if Lucasfilm had let Timothy use all the 'tie ins' to Vader he wanted to have it would have been more interesting. Who can not love the scene where Lea is questioning Khabarakh and gets back to her roots as an uppity princess.

Of course Thrawn is just a great villain. Even in defeat he can still look at the larger picture and see a way to win. I had forgotten a lot of the small things but so many things I remembered and liked.

It's great to see where this all started and how a lot of things he mentioned would fuel other writers to create stories of their own.

Yep, looking forward to recording this discussion. :)

Druss (stansnig) | 6 comments Haven't read this one since the year it came out. Early nineties. I feel old. When's the recording? I will try to get a comment on time this time!

The Heir to the Empire show should be out in about a month (April 24th-ish).

Dee Mara Jade was everything I wanted to be as a kid. I listened to this podcast having not read this book in years, so I had to go back and reread it, and then listen to the podcast again. I still adore this book, and I really felt like it held up.
