Bud Not Buddy, written by Christopher Paul Curtis, is about a boy named bud (Bud, not Buddy) Caldwell, a 10 year old orphan currently residing in Flint, Michigan. He is an African American during the 1930’s (Great Depression), where white people were not too kind to black folk. Bud’s mother, Angela Janet Caldwell, died when he was only 6 years old, so, he was sent to an orphanage. When the story begins, Bud was being sent to a foster home where he was treated very poorly. Most of the time back then, the foster parents did not care about the foster children. All they cared about was the money involved. One day Bud was punished and sent to a shed. He finally had enough. He then escapes his terrible foster home in search of his dad who he has been wanting to search for years. Bud’s mother had left behind a flyer with a man’s name, Herman E. Calloway, who lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. So Bud takes a long journey with many twists and turns and ups and downs. Eventually, Bud ends up at Mr. Calloway’s door and tells him who his mother is and you will never guess what happens next!
I found this book very interesting. I think it was nice to see how blacks were treated back then to how they are treated now. Bud Not Buddy is quite an easy read. I would recommend this for people ages 10 and up. The way Bud’s foster parents and siblings treat him really shocked me. Usually orphanages take their time and put their kids in good homes. Here, Bud was basically thrown into a home without meeting his foster parents. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the 1930’s period or anyone struggling in their current home situation. Bud will teach you some really valuable lessons that you will want to keep in mind for the rest of your life.
