Sounds like a blueprint for a roadtrip (with designated driver, of course.)There's also a link on the same Guardian page of pictures in an exhibit on the Krays.

That's an inspired idea Miss M - perhaps a PHAS beano with obligatory charabanc

There's a new film coming out so probably a link to that. It's starring the always watchable Tom Hardy playing both twins....

Nice link, cheers. If there's one thing I love it's a proper old fashioned pub, indeed the better half and I were married in the George. There's a few in there I've never visited before so I might have to find some time and make a few trips.
Couldn't agree more CQM. Thanks Val. Wonderful stuff. A few old faves in there and a few that I hope to visit having read the article.
Feast your eyes on these magnificent photos of the pubs of old London....
Thanks to Mark for telling me about the Spitalfields life website
From the webpage:
...you can imagine my excitement to discover all these thirst-inspiring images of the pubs of old London among the thousands of glass slides – many dating from a century ago – left over from the days of the magic lantern shows given by the London & Middlesex Archaeological Society at the Bishopsgate Institute. It did set me puzzling over the precise nature of these magic lantern lectures. How is it that among the worthy images of historic landmarks, of celebrated ruins, of interesting holes in the ground, of significant trenches and important church monuments in the City of London, there are so many pictures of public houses? I can only wonder how it came about that the members of the London & Middlesex Archaeological Society photographed such a lot of pubs, and why they should choose to include these images in their edifying public discourse.

I've been keeping tabs since Mark mentioned it and I must confess to having "wasted" several hours getting sidetracked by various things all along the way. The great London beer flood for example... if you gotta go...Anyhow I for one cant wait for Mark to head our way, I'm already devising a history filled pubular crawl to take him on. You in Nige?
It looks like I’ll be headed your way in April, and I'll be sure to turn up thirsty! That Spitalfields Life site is one of the best, ain’t it? Even the less interesting postings are interesting. And with daily updates, it’s one of my essential bookmarks.
This is getting better and better - a chance to reacquaint myself with Mark and to m the a of CQM
History filled pub crawls are amongst my most favourite things in the whole wide world

Sometimes i eben enjoy non history filled pub crawls, judt to keep my hand in.
H'mmm. Let's see here now. No, I'm sure I couldna recall any of the pubs I crawled when I visited England as a college student. All those brain cells are lost.
Except one. The beer at Veeraswamy on Regent St. Said to be the oldest Indian restaurant in the City.
One of the most pleasurable dining experiences I've ever had. The evening of a lifetime.
Veeraswamy has spectacular food, service, atmosphere, and of course tall frosty steins of tart, crisp, Indian beer.
Like the beady glass o' lager, downed by John Mills in 'Ice Cold in Alex'. If you've ever viewed the flick you know the scene I mean.
It really meant a lot to me,. See, on several of my hikes I was down 'n out; bumming around Europe on the cheap; limited funds; nothing in pocket. Sleeping on park benches.
And I had a bird wit me that same nite, and money for a hotel in Kensington or Mayfair or somewheres like that. Just grand.

Historic England announces list of 21 establishments from interwar era to be protected by government as examples of the ‘improved pub’ movement - some truly lovely looking, idiosyncratic pubs here....

Patrick Hamilton would be proud. Probably.
If you have a favourite post-war pub, Historic England wants to hear from you....
