Dawn | 257 comments Not about a particular comic, but ComicM!x is doing a March Madness of webcomics. Seeding (I think that's the right term) ends today (3/13) at 11:59 PM EDT and brackets go up tomorrow.

Found some potential new comics to check out, too!

Kristen | 1179 comments I voted! There are a few that I was surprised to see or not see on the list. Sfeer Theory wasn't on there and I am rather unhappy about that.

A lot of the ones that are at the top, I've never heard of. I'm going to have to see what they're about and give them a shot.

Did anyone else notice that you can purchase more votes? If you pay 20 cents, you can vote for a webcomic an additional time. The money goes to charity, but the whole point of voting is that everyone has an equal say in who wins. This way, it's the fandom that has the most expendable income that wins. I don't like it.

Dawn | 257 comments Round one brackets are up. I found you have to scroll down past the actual brackets to find the voting place.

(And I do agree that buying votes, even for charity, is a bit iffy. And those votes don't even show in the tally until the round is done. So you can't know if your comic is actually in the lead or not. :/ )

Kristen | 1179 comments You know, webcomic lists and awards and things are kind of weird. A lot of really good quality stuff doesn't make it to the list and a lot of horrible stuff ends up winning. There's also a lot of comics on here that I'm fairly certain did not update in 2013. I don't think they should be included in awards for the year if they weren't updated at least once.

I'm usually pretty disappointed with how these things go. The comics that I like tend to not make it past the first round or two.

Dawn | 257 comments It's not just polls and votes for webcomics that get weird. I've participated in ones for TV shows and the like and frankly, it's not just sour grapes when we say we think it's rigged (or whatever). I sometimes just can't help but participate, you know?

Voted in round 1. I'm like you Dawn - despite my general disappointment with how these things go I'm still compelled to participate. It's always really weird though. Some comics (or shows, actors, etc) have more rabid fanbases, are just generally more well known, or have fans more likely to be familiar with sites that run these tournaments, which really seems to skew results.

There are also comics that have been around forever and have a huge advantage. If someone read and even remotely liked some of it ever they are likely to vote for it, regardless of it's quality as a whole or how it was in 2013.

In principle the buying extra votes thing bothers me, but because of the factors I mentioned above already skewing/invalidating the results to an extent I don't mind it so much. At least the results here are unfair for charity. I do wish the extra votes were counted in real time with the rest of them though so it was clear who was winning.

The contenders here are really weird. Some glaring omissions and odd inclusions. And while Garfield Minus Garfield amuses me greatly: considering it as a webcomic for a tournament? Really?

Kristen | 1179 comments I think, for March Madness, they took the webcomics from last year and then added the new ones. Garfield Minus Garfield does seem like an odd choice and I don't think it's as popular as it was a while ago. It's technically a webcomic, but I don't see why anyone cares. It's like if someone nominated Peanuts. It's probably online somewhere, so you could argue that it's a webcomic, but it doesn't count.
