So I'm about midway through this now and... I'm interested in it but not really engaged in it, if that makes sense. I really enjoyed Vaughn's other book After the Golden Age, but this one just feels... not as polished, in a way. The narrative is jumping all over the place, and we have a story in story, as well as alternate history/universe, I guess, and I'm finding myself wishing it would settle down a bit and just tell the story.
Anyone else reading this?
I did read it a few years ago. But my copy doesn't seem to be at the house. Hmmm. Whatever did I do with it?Anyway, I agree with your comments. I did like it, but I didn't feel as engaged as I did with her Kitty books.
Oh, and I found a copy of After the Golden Age at the Dollar General not too long ago, for $3.
I finished late last night and am sad it's over. I *almost* want a sequel - and, from me, that's high praise. I really had no idea I'd like it so much, and I def. have this group to thank for drawing my attention to it.I actually liked the way Vaughn wrote jumping around from story to story. Often I don't, but here it directly contributed to the vibe of Evie's story and to the concept of how the magic worked and how the immortals lived through time. It was discordant on purpose....
A question. If Evie had been more pragmatic, less emotional, and (view spoiler)
I just finished today, and I'm actually pretty mad that Vaughn included a spoiler about another, completely unrelated book, just as a throwaway reference. That kind of thing makes me so mad. What a shitty thing to do. Otherwise, the story was... OK. I expected more and better, and thought the ending was incredibly rushed and convenient.
I rated it 2 stars for the book and story, but dropped it to 1 because I was pissed about the spoiler.
I have this checked out. I'm still working on Words of Radiance, but plan to start this after I finish that.
I really don't remember the spoiler, which is a good thing I guess. Though I don't remember much at all about the book, to be honest.
I started this--I'm enjoying it, but am not terribly engaged. It's a fun read, but I just don't feel very drawn into the setting (which has cool ideas) or story. I thought it was because I just finished Words of Radiance (which was awesome), but a glance over the comments indicates I'm not the only one who feels lukewarm.
