What did you think of it? Favorite or least favorite characters? Favorite or least favorite part?

antoanaxo | 49 comments At first I thought it would be a rip off of Harry Potter but it was very enjoyable. The plot twist at the end had me screaming at the book. 4.5/5 stars overall.

Sabrina (forebodinq) | 62 comments I did enjoy this book and my favourite part was all the twists and turns the novel takes as well as Call's development. I can definitely see younger readers falling in love with it.
I was determined not to let my love for Harry Potter influence me in my view of this book but I thought that (view spoiler) is a teensy bit close for comfort.
I loved seeing the friendships formed in this book and I look forward to the rest of the series.

we bought this- and it has vanished on our bookshelves. :( now the 2 nd book is out and I refuse to buy it until I find book 1 and plow through.

With those 2 for authors, it would be near impossible for it to be bad.

Azaria Gerardo (bookflix) | 11 comments I need to pick this one up after reading Queen Of Shadows :)

Jaina | 28 comments Very Harry Potter-esque, but not so much that it was annoyingly familiar. Call was pretty self-pitying, but somehow it was kind of... endearing? And that plot-twist! WHAT? Never saw that coming. I really wish this was around when I was a kid - or a younger kid, I guess.

You should! I've been dying to get my hands on QoS though.

We're not talking about QoS yet. My copy hasn't arrived! ;)

I started this book last month but ended up putting it back down because of all the HP similarities and I just couldn't get into it very well. Granted I only managed to last as far as Cal eating his first breakfast the school.

Should I give it another shot?

Heather Miller | 2 comments i really enjoyed this book (and so did my daughter, which says a lot!) i was yelling at Cal at the end....why didnt he tell them?!?!? (well, i guess that it wouldnt be much of a series if they fixed it all in one book, would it? lol) i cant wait for the next one!

definitely give it another shot. its very enjoyable and i think it will turn in to a good series of books?

Fox ~ you will love him to ruins ~ (fabulousfox) | 31 comments Cassandra Clare is one of my favorite authors of all time, so of course I really enjoyed this book. I haven't read anything by Holly Black, but NOW I WANT TO. My favorite part was the end. Because that plot twist. I can't even. I've started reading the second book, and that one is really good too so far!

The HP similarities bothered me a lot too at first (tbh they still kind of bother me), but overall I enjoyed the book, so I think you should give it another try :)

Meghan (moorebooksplease) | 51 comments @Fox - Holly Black' s stuff can be trippy, but you will enjoy the fall!

Am (xlcior) It was a fast and nice read, and I enjoyed it! I felt a bit too old to identify with the characters, but it was fine anyway. Totally didn't see the plot twist coming! Will probably pick up the second book in a while.

Amber (amiwonder) I really liked this book! My favorite character was Warren. Seriously, that little guy was so hilarious.

I think the story was great and exciting but (I mentioned this in my review) that the story didn't start to get my full attention until page 140. After page 140 it is fantastic, and I can not wait to read the rest of the series.

I completely agree with Fox as well. Anyone who doesn't want to read it because of the similarities to HP just give it a shot, at least get to page 140. That's when the first little twist comes in. I also think that while the similarities are there, the differences are too. The characters are great in their own way and so is the story if you aren't trying to compare them.
At least that's how I feel.

Am (xlcior) I absolutely agree! I feel like except for the part where it's a school for magic, there really aren't many similarities!

Meghan (moorebooksplease) | 51 comments omigosh- kids and I read this one this weekend while we were camping. SO funny. you can see where the authors censored themselves and tamed down their jokes to make them "littles" friendly. I made my kid spit pop out his nose reading one of the scenes. so they nailed the tween humor angle.

We ran out to B&N and bought copper guantlet. the first chapter- holy man! not pulling any punches. my kids were all " waa?! no way!!" in their little horrified faces. And I am all "muhahhahaha- buckle up kids. it just got real." that scene was so holly black in her delivery. bam, sucker punched you in the face. your welcome. I love her style. and clare's humor is everywhere.

Amber (amiwonder) I can not wait to read the second one, you have got me very excited! Purchased a copy and am just waiting for it to come in mail!

Hayley Morgan I loved it! It was so funny and it was great to see a strong physically disabled character who didn't let his disability stop it. Plus the twist, I mean wow! it was so awesome!!
All the characters were so well developed and real. Plus the humour was great. :)

I also enjoyed the humor very much. I'm looking forward to reading the 4th installment of the series!
