When V.C. Andrews was in the hospital as a teenager, for a spinal injury, she claimed to have met a doctor who claimed that he and his siblings were locked up for six years to preserve the family wealth. Do you think she told the truth about that? If so, could he have been telling the truth?

For their sake,I hope the whole book isn't true.

V.C Andrews had a very interesting and fallout past. she was a unique individual who probably liked to create drama in her head, even if it meant creating an incestuous romance. I highly doubt that FITA was based off of a true story.

I have no doubt that there is some kernel of truth in this story. However, that kernel may be nothing more than someone was locked away with the rest being a story. It may also be an accidental kernel of truth, which means there may be truth to the story, but she didn't know about the truth and this was just her imagination all along.

Wow, thanks so much for posting that link! How fascinating, especially to read her original "pitch" letter.

As for the story, I feel that it definitely could be true. The doctor said he and his siblings were locked away so his mother could inherit the family fortune; history is full of those kind of dark deeds. I'm inclined to believe the editor who said, "Yes, Flowers in the Attic was based on a story she heard when she was in the hospital for a spinal operation.... Well, someone told it to her, yes. Some doctor there. So I'd guess that some aspects of it were true--at least the aspect of kids being hidden away. Whether the twins were real, the sex, the time frame, probably not. I think it was just the concept of kids hidden in the attic so the mother could inherit a fortune."

The other truth could have been the relationship. A confession of hers was found that had been submitted anonymously years back , it was about her sleeping with a relative on her wedding night which is strange, like why the hell would she choose her wedding night to do that? Idk man but she wrote an interesting book series.

According to her ghost writer , that’s a rumor but hey it could be true , at least the “meeting a handsome doctor” part. Lol
