Today is all about chapter one, which serves as a recap so we know where things stand- Torin doesn't remember Raine, and no one remembers him or the other Valkyries. Many of her friends died but she saved Cora and Eirik and she now has her Dad back, plus she knows her mom is a former Valkyrie. Her witchy possibilities are something she's trying to come to terms with all while trying to figure out how to get the Norns to put things back to normal.
What's a girl to do?
What do you think of her plan to win Torin over again? Should she just cut her losses and move on or risk upsetting the norns further?
And how about her excuses for kissing him? LOL

I'm ready!

Jeannie | 17 comments Raine should definitely not give up on Torin. He will come around at some point. He has to remember! Any excuse to kiss Torin is a good excuse. Her plan to win Torin over is a good start.

Day/ch 2:

Let's talk first impressions- do you think Raine's assessment of Lavania is fair?
What's up with Eirik and Cora, they barely got along but now they are squeezing hands?
Why do you think the norns showed up?

Jeannie | 17 comments Sometimes when people really like each other they show it by fighting and bickering. That is how I saw Eirik and Cora. There were some hints about the possibility of them in Runes. So I wasn't surprised by their squeezing of hands. The norns seem to like to cause trouble; not a good sign. It's hard to know if it's really fair yet. I can't blame Raine for not liking Lavania when Lavania is acting very close to Torin like she is.

3&4
So Raine is realizing things are worse than she thought- the Norns are back and are giving her ominous warnings (forget about Torin and help Eirik? why?)
Cora explains how hard it was with all the funerals and tons of kids are giving Raine crap about being a witch. I love that she's turning it around on them. How would you handle it if you were in her place?

It's once again Raine's Mom knows more than she's let on, or at least that's what the Norns say, making her wonder what she supposed to do and who Eirik really is. Do you think he's a valkyrie too?

He calls her Freckles! how could she not have hope after that!

Of course Torin doesn't seem to know what that really means in the beginning of ch 4.

What did you make of everything Lavania told Raine?

Now she's torn between training and letting it all go. Honestly I understand her confusion, especially since there has been absolutely no progress with Torin's memory.
It was sweet of him to fix her car though:)

Did you think Eirik was more mad at Raine almost kissing Torin or that he had to be there to see it? He appears to like Cora so it isn't totally fair to be against Raine's liking Torin, but she also dragged him along for too long.
and then
they talk.
she practically lies to him but when he point blank asks her she doesn't deny they kissed while he was technically still with her. oops
What's up with his attitude though, it's so unlike him.
and that moment with Torin, whew she certainly gets hot under the collar.
Then he ruins it, utterly and completely. How would you have reacted to his statement about their relationship? and his continued taunts?

Jeannie | 17 comments It would be awesome if I handle being called a witch by the students like Raine did but I would probably try to avoid the kids and then get mad at them.

I'm not sure if Eirik is a Valkyrie but he is someone special and not human.

I loved that he called her Freckles, it means there is hope he will remember. I can see how that could hurt Raine at this point in time though.

Wow what an informative conversation between Lavania and Raine. I agree Ashley - I can also understand her confusion.

I feel so bad for Eirik - Raine should have been honest and broke things off in Runes. I understand why she didn't but it really wasn't fair to Eirik. I think he was upset with both that she almost kissed Torin and that he was there. Agreed he seems to also like Cora but I think Eirik really cares for Raine and this new knowledge of Raine and Torin is hurting him. Eirik's attitude is different - at this point in the book I wondered if he was just trying to deal with all the stuff going on in his family life.

I would have slammed my car door and drove off. It would have totally pissed me off and really hurt me too. He is lucky that she loves him and may understand that it's the lack of memory that will help her forgive him in the future.

Yes she does!!

Debbie Bunton | 20 comments Oh, Raine should never give up on Torin. While he seems a little cocky in the beginning, I think Raine is the perfect one to balance him out.

I wasn't sure how I felt about Lavania in the beginning. I worried that she would interfere with ToRaine.

And Raine's whole relationship with Eirik bothered me. I feel she held on to him too long. Even though he seems to feel something for Cora and Raine wants Torin, she should have told him much earlier than she did in my opinion.

Raine is certainly not very nice to Eirik, and then to get mad at him for being upset over her and Torin...so not fair.

huzzah! finally! we're in the end of ch 4 and chapter 5 and things are just not going well for our Rainey babe...not at all.
Her Mom has revealed that she's sworn an oath she can't break and that Lavania will explain things to Raine, which certainly does happen. Actually we learn a lot about the norns here and what they can do, or typically anyway.
What did you think about Svana's story, from Lavania's pov? And what about Raine's sudden declaration they should start her lessons asap?

Or maybe you'd like to tell me what you thought about the big reveal- Eirik is WHO'S Grandson?!!! whoa

I love Ednah's version of Loki and Baldur's story, how many are familiar with any of this mythology?

Poor Torin,,,,he really wanted to help Raine but he had no idea what they would lose..sobs.

Eirik's acting mighty strange, what do you think is going on there? Is it just him trying to cope with what they've learned of his heritage or something else?

How should Raine go about getting Blue eyes to remember her? It's awfully sweet of Eirik to want to help...sort of lol

Jeannie | 17 comments Yes that was big news on who Eirik was. Wow a God. No wonder he is special. The story about Baldur and his mother was so sad. I felt bad for Frigg. I only know a little of this mythology mostly from Thor movies and Witches of East End. Every story different. I really like this version too; though sad but it produced Eirik. I'm interested to know what this dark shadow is that is following Eirik and if it has to do with him acting strange.

It was nice to know more about Raine's Mom and her background. Shows how much love means to her and that she would give up anything to be with Raine's father. So romantic. It was interesting to hear how powerful Svana was and how a fighter which was a surprise. Also it's so amazing with how old Svana is too.

Yay I'm glad Raine wants to start her lessons. The sooner she can learn the better.

Poor Eirik - he sure is realizing how much Torin loves Raine and all that he would do for her. I like her plan of holding back a little and showing him what he is missing. He's still attracted to her even if he doesn't remember yet. This runes book may help him believe her and I agree that right now is not the time to give it to him.

I hope your kiddo gets better soon. Never fun having a sick child.

Oh poor Eirik - it seems that something dark is inside of him or trying to take control of him. I'm sure we will have more answers in the book. Not sure what all this has to do with Raine and why she is suppose to protect him and how she is suppose to protect him.

Looking forward to your BIG update tomorrow. :) I'll need to refresh my reading to be prepared.

Eirik's mad, Cora's clueless and Torin is really getting to Raine, chapters 6 and 7 tell us a lot more about why Svana hasn't told Tristan the truth about what's going on/what happened at the dreadful swim meet, and Raine is getting sick of the locker vandalization. What's up in Kayville? things are definitely not ok, it almost seems like there is something dark settling in.
what do you think? Who is to blame for the lockers? Why is Torin so moody and Andris so mean? Is lavania really wanting to help Raine?

AK Mama Reads (reniazen) | 117 comments Mod
Did anyone else want to grab Torin and smack him upside the head at this point? lol

Jeannie | 17 comments Good questions Ashley! It definitely seems like something dark is in Kayville. Every one is acting so weird and something is up with Eirik. The vandalisms of the lockers is such a mystery. Who and why would they be doing that I'm not sure yet. I'm sure they will figure out who it is soon. YES I wanted to smack Torin in the head but it seems like he is showing interest in Raine and maybe a little caring. I don't know why Andris is being so mean, especially about Raine and Torin. Maybe he doesn't want to put up with Torin's moodiness anymore. I think Torin is so moody as he's body and mood is reflecting the division between him and Raine, though he doesn't realize it. Just my guess.

So 8 and 9 have us still wondering who's trying to mess with Raine (and now Cora, though she does try to set them straight, whoever "they" are.) We've also seen the uber weirdness at the cafe with Eirik and Lavania has begun to teach Raine history and runes.
What did you think of Lavania's suggestion to get help from Torin? Do you think she is oblivious to Raine and Torin's past? Why can Andris remember what no one else seems to be able to besides Raine?
then theres that saucy kiss *swoon hehehe*

Tell me what you'd like to do from here, should we keep it simple and open ended or have more thorough questions? one chapter a day or two? I'm all ears!

Jeannie | 17 comments I was really surprised to read that Torin and Eirik were kind of working together to find who was messing with Raine and Cora's lockers. I love that even though Torin lost his memories he is starting to love and care for Raine. Even though it is driving her crazy with his denial, it's the little things and his body's reaction to her that shows it. If I remember from Runes, Andris was gone during the swimming pool part so maybe that is why he can remember. Torin was too but he was the reason why those memories were erased.

I think Lavania has suspensions about Raine and Torin and maybe she was wanting to push the two of them to work together so they may come together. Does that make sense? I love her and Raine's dinner conversation. Though it bugged me that she was bothered as to why Torin didn't call or go out with other girls. I think Lavania doesn't know their past but does know that they had one.

Definitely Swoon!

I'm liking these questions being simple and open ended. Either way; one or two chapters works for me. What ever is easiest for you and your schedule I'm good with.

Let's catch up to ch 10/11ish shall we?

The gangs starting to think Raine is up to something, which well to be honest she is- trying to win Torin back then bam what it worked..only wait...Andris helped? When did he become helpful?
Why do you think Andris helped Torin and Raine- do you think it had more to do with loyalty than an actual sense of wanting to be nice?

Eirik and Cora need to just kiss and get it over with, sheesh! He totally flips out for her flirting? Not cool dude, you have to at least take a girl out for a burger before you go schizo. How do you deal with possessive people?

Jeannie | 17 comments Truthfully I think Andris was just sick of Torin's grumpiness and irritable behavior. Who knows maybe he just likes them together. Wow I was a little surprised with how fast Torin and Raine got back together, since Torin was fighting it when Raine first mentioned their past. It was sweet of Andris, regardless of his reason, to share with Torin his history with Raine. There are some situations in life where being the actual parties involved are too close to the situation and those parties need the influence of outsiders. This being one of those cases.

No kidding, Eirik needs to be the aggressor with Cora. She needs to know he is ready - he shouldn't go psycho just because she was flirting. She has always been a flirt; so her behavior isn't new to him. Sure makes you wonderful what the heck is going on with him. To be out of it and not know Raine or Cora and to laugh and enjoy others torment. Hmmm If someone is super possessive in life it's best to stay as far away as you can from them.

Great questions Ashley.

Hooray I can finally post again! stinkin internet colluding with stupid goodreads argh........so as we wrap our heads around what's happening to Eirik, it would seem that there are forces beyond any of these people's control at play. Eirik is hot and cold and so is Cora now....so what gives? Do you think they are together and afraid to tell Raine? Why would they not act like it in public though?
Raine finally gets to really spend time with her Dad but she's distracted by the troubles with Eirik. How do you deal with spending time with people when you have a lot on your mind? I'm quite terrible at it unfortunately.

Torin in running shorts. That is all.

Oh but wait he wants to spend more time with her- yay! Until Andris comes along with his little confession. Still confused as to why he'd help get Torin and Raine back together when he so obviously dislikes her. Why do you think Andris wanted to ask Raine about Maliina?

We still don't know who's vandalizing the lockers but is there anyone you're suspecting for sure? My money has been on Ingrid bc she's so pissed about Maliina disappearing and blames Raine.

If you had an immortal life span, what would you most like to do with your time? I'd love to learn as many languages as possible and visit exotic places.

Raine's plan to help Torin remember ends up with a graveyard lesson on different reapers. Then Torin announces their courtship to the team and Cora and Eirik seem to know right away. Again this seems odd, but maybe it's just with everything going on Eirik can't be bothered with anything else right now.

Eirik's fears and insecurities are keeping him from really making a go of it with Cora, but do you think he's really over Raine?

Why do you think Cora is ignoring Raine? hmm this is getting curious

Jeannie | 17 comments Glad the internet and Goodreads is working for you now.

I really don't know what is up with Eirik and Cora! They are doing boyfriend and girlfriend stuff says Raine but as readers we don't really see much of what they are doing. If they are maybe they don't want to act like it in front of Raine to spare her feelings. Not really sure though.

So happy for Raine to have her Dad back. They seem like they have a special relationship. How cute that Torin was following them. It's hard to focus with the people you are with when your mind is somewhere else. I tend to have to push back what is on my mind and try to focus on those that are with me. Unless it's a larger group and I don't have to pay close attention to them. BTW - Torin's line "Catching you. Claiming you. You'll always be mine" - SWOON

I was surprised with Andris and his big hand in helping Torin return to Raine. I don't think he did it out of the kindness of his heart. He saw an opportunity and grabbed it - especially since he is making all these demands from them. It sounds like from this chapter Andris doesn't understand what really happened between Raine and Maliina. He seemed to really loved Maliina so I think he wants more clarity of what went wrong.

I'm not sure who is vandalizing the lockers. My guess was the Norns but I like that it could be Ingrid. I never thought about her but I could see her doing it.

Yes I would travel all over, learn the culture and languages. I would want to help in all areas and try to make a difference in the world.

Just want to mention I loved the salad making scene. :) I figured Cora and Eirik knew from everyone texting, social media etc from the café. Words travel fast. I don't think Eirik is over Raine yet but I also think he has liked Cora for a long time. I think he is not ready to really make it work. It could be everything that he is going through right now and the fact he can't really share that with her. At least with Raine he can experience all of this crazy in his life and lean on her as well.

Cora is acting really weird and different than she did in Book One - I definitely think something is up with her.

So now we're at the point where Raine decides to confront Cora...and ends up on her side instead. Why do you think she changed tactics and encouraged Cora to make Eirik jealous? Was she just testing her?

The dinner couldn't have been more awkward if a turd sandwich had been served.

What the Hel kind of transformation are those Norns talking about? Is Eirik becoming a Valkyrie? Is that possible for a god? What is this darkness. Ack so many questions! they're entirely unhelpful hags.

Cora and Eirik are worse than ever with this whole Jaden business, but they neither one seem like themselves.

NOw there's weaponry being distributed and Raine is more confused than ever (as am I frankly) and this is the part where I can't put the book down. I mean they are talking about some serious consequences if Eirik can't fight the darkness.....lethal even. Why do you think they tell Raine about their vision of Eirik and Ragnarok? Who do you think Catie could mean when she says someone is helping the darkness?

I love how supportive Torin is and how he reassures Raine she is strong and doesn't need to cave to the norns' taunting. Have you ever had anyone who's been there for you no matter how tough things get, or someone whom you helped through such a situation?

Poor Eirik :(

Jeannie | 17 comments Maybe Raine thought if Eirik was jealous he would react and want to get Cora back. Cora and Eirik's whole relationship seems confusing. Their "tried to be together" didn't really seem like they tried. Cora could have been testing Raine to see if Raine really wanted them to be together or just saying so to appease Cora.

Turd Sandwich LOL I like it. Yes how awkward was that dinner.

Who is Eirik's MOM - and the darkness in side of him. It sounds like he is turning into a demon or something. Eff the Norns. Really I want to know what is happening to Eirik and if Raine is able to really help him. I'm guessing she can.

Yep count me in on the confusion train. The Norns are probably trying to scare Raine with the vision of Eirik and Ragnarok into joining them. Another one of their tricks. I don't know who Catie means but I agree with her. I think it's more than just the darkness inside of Eirik that is bringing this all out of him. I wish Raine could just deal with Catie - she seems the better of the three Norns.

My husband is my support system - he is always there for me. I love that too. Ohhh heart swooning when he told her his feelings and asked her not to stop loving him. I wonder what his favor is and why it involves her. He seems scared that she would never want to be with him after he is done.

IKR - poor Eirik!
