Heather Godwin (hpgodwin) | 84 comments Susan had never hung up a stocking . She'd never put a tooth under her pillow in the serious expectation that a dentally inclined fairy would turn up. It wasn't that her parents didn't believe in such things. They didn't need to believe in them. They know they existed. They just wished they didn't.
I love Terry Pratchett (RIP Terry) and his Discworld series but hadn't read Hogfather, which is a discworld spoof on Father Christmas or '..the Fat Man.'
Very witty and classic Pratchett novel for anyone looking for something different for the holiday read.

Marta (gezemice) Oh The Hogfather is one of my favorites! Although, technically, it takes place at Hogswatch, not at Christmas ;)

Jessica | 225 comments I think I haven't read many of Terry Prachett's work (probably only 1 or 2, if any), I plan to read this book for the "During Christmas" week as well to remedy my lack of reading his books.

Heather Godwin (hpgodwin) | 84 comments Have you read Mort Jessica? It's probably the only Discworld book I'd recommend before reading Hogfather.
For the most part, I think you can read the Discworld series in any other out of order because it's all pretty random, but some of the stuff about Death & Susan makes more sense with Mort.

Jessica | 225 comments I have not. If I have time and if I can find a copy, I will check it out :)

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments Mort is the best of the Discworld books IMO. Death is seriously one of the best characters ever!

I agree, Death is great! I really like Granny too!
I read the Hogfather a long time ago so I just remember it wasn't one of my favorites in Discworld, but it was a nice read!

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments The witches are probably my second favourite subset of characters after Death - Nanny Ogg is awesome!

Biana All this talk about discworld!! My favorite is the Tiffany Aching trilogy. Yes, it's part of his Young Adult set, but I had young adults when we read it. The Wee Free Men is the start.

Didn't they make Hogfather into a movie too??

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments Wee Free Men is the one I'm up to in the series - it's on my 2016 challenge list somewhere. I am really looking forward to it!

Jessica | 225 comments Finished Mort and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. Can't wait to get started on this one, but I have to finish a couple more books before I get to this one :D

Marta (gezemice) Oh, I think Death is awesome, too! Mort is one of the best. My favorites are the witches as well, Nanny Ogg is a hoot, although I am partial to Granny Weatherwax :) Also get a kick out of Lord Verinari. Have not read the Tiffany Aiken books, they are on my list for 2016, too.

Heather Godwin (hpgodwin) | 84 comments So glad you got to read Mort Jessica, it will make Albert & Death & Susan's dynamic that much better in Hogfather, promise. The books that feature Death are my favorite in the Discworld series.

Brittany (booksandbottles) (gamerkiti) Ok, so I've looked at Terry Pratchett books before, but never really seemed like my cup of tea. However, after reading all these comments, this Discworld series has been added to my TBR list :)

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments They are really clever & really funny!

Brittany (booksandbottles) (gamerkiti) I'm looking forward to reading them! I'm a little intimidated that in total there are like 40 books though haha

message 17: by Jody (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments Don't be! I started reading them around 20 years ago and still haven't finished. It's quite a unique series in that it's not really a series, more like a group of books that all occur in the same fantasy world. They do get funnier as they go along, as there are some running jokes & you also get to know the characters better. I love that I can just read one of them when I feel like it, but there's so desperate compulsion to read another one to find out what's going to happen next.
