Elisa | 5 comments Have you guys heard about this? This is not how Harry Hole looks in my head, but I'm excited about the movie... The Snowman is arguably one of the best of the series.

I'm not sure there is anyone who would live up to what I see in my head when I read Nesbo's Hole books. Fassbender doesn't look the part b/c I don't see the edge Hole has, but that's what acting is all about so I'm definitely onboard!

The Snowman begins Oslo shoot with Michael Fassbender and Rebecca Ferguson

Five years after his latest feature – the John le Carré adaptation Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy [+], which was nominated for three Oscars and won a BAFTA – Swedish director Tomas Alfredson started principal photography yesterday (18 January) for The Snowman on location in Oslo.

One of the early arrivals for the production was German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender, who has just been Oscar-nominated for British director Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs [+]; here, he plays the lead as anti-authority, anti-sobriety detective Harry Hole. The cast also includes Swedish actress Rebecca Ferguson and French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Scripted by US screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan, and produced by the UK’s Working Title and Hollywood’s Universal Pictures, The Snowman will shoot in Oslo, Bergen and Rjukan (in the Telemark region) until early March, as the first feature project to benefit from the 25% rebate incentive for international film and TV series shot in Norway. A 160-strong crew (including 100 Norwegians) and 1,700 local extras are involved.

Among the locations the production has scheduled are Oslo’s Holmenkollen ski recreation area, Hole’s favourite café at Restaurant Schrøder in St Hanshaugen and Telemark’s Notodden Airport. The municipality of Oslo has supported the efforts to land the production to the tune of €160,000, while other funds have contributed €84,000.

In the seventh of Norwegian author Jo Nesbø’s Hole thrillers, the detective is searching for a missing woman – the only trace left of her is her pink scarf, worn by a snowman in the yard. He finds out that over the last decade, 11 women have vanished on the day of the first snow – then he receives an anonymous letter signed “The Snowman”. The film will have its world premiere on 13 October 2017.

Sharon To those that loved the first film with Department Q here is good news:
A new spine-chiller in TrustNordisk and Zentropa Productions's cold case series is reaching the cinemas in March. Directed by Hans Petter Moland, "A Conspiracy of Faith" sets off as an eight-year old message in a bottle ends up at Department Q. Carl Mørck (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) and his assistant Assad (Fares Fares) are drawn into a case involving a psychopathic murderer, religious fanaticism and abducted siblings never reported missing by their parents. Mikkel Nørgaard directed the first two adaptations of crime writer Jussi Adler-Olsen's novels, The Keeper of Lost Causes: A Department Q Mystery and The Absent One. Danish release 3 March.
The trailer is great and happy to see they kept the same actors!

Sharon,
I've read all the Dept Q series but had not realized there was a film. Can you tell me more about it? Which book? Tv movie or for theaters? Released only in Europe? Would love to see it if I can find it!
Thanks!
Susan

Good to google and read wiki on writers I find. For the detail below I googled department q! I just received the second film which I ordered from Amazon Germany (an Amazon account works for all Amazons but I prefer to not pay shipping ) and haven't had time to view it yet but really enjoyed the first. Quote wiki on author
was adapted into a Danish film by Zentropa in 2012, titled "Keeper of Lost Causes" in English. It was the top box office film in Denmark in 2013. A sequel, a film adaptation of Fasandræberne ("The Absent One" in English), was released in 2014. Both films star Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares.

His latest novel is The Boundless (Den Grænseløse) (2014) is the 6th volume in the Department Q series.

Another way to know what an author is writing, producing or touring and giving interviews and lectures etc is to like them on your Facebook page and you will get notifications of everything as it happens. Fabulous fun. In this case he has just finished a huge tour of France promoting his book in French........

Sharon,
Somehow I watched the first and third of these films and overlooked the second. While I agree they are well done and interesting, I do not particularly like the casting for Carl or the way he is portrayed. The Carl of the books has a lot of wit/sarcasm, whereas the Carl of the films portrays the darker/disturbed side of his personality almost exclusively. Rose's character lacks the eccentricity of the books, which is disappointing. If I had never read the books and only seen the films, I could be happier about it all.

I am glad the films are available and will certainly be watching the second one soon...hope there will be more!
Susan

Looking forward to the third. Enjoy the characters way better in the films than books because with each book he went more and more OTT with the eccentric elements which made them become less viable to me. Hence I stopped reading them. Actor playing Carl is in more and more. Liked him in Follow the Money too.
