Happy Halloween, groupies!

Please select a book from our Horror Selections and place your nomination here.

Some classics fall into the horror category, so you may pick one for horror and a different book for the classics category too.

Nominations end on the 17th!

Thank you!

Kris (My Novelesque Life) (mynovelesquelife) I would like to nominate The Woman in Black by Susan Hill.

Melanti Greg wrote: "I wanted to nominate Bambi by Felix Salten but it was not selected."

That's not nearly as cutesy of a book as Disney made it seem.

It does have some disturbing chapters. And I'm not talking about Bambi's mom.

I have never read it. I have only watched the film which had more goofs than Goofy.

One of my fav classics!

Bigollo This one is not on the list but it's a horror all right, a fabulous story by one of my favorite authors Nikolay Gogol:

The Viy

Allegra | 116 comments We did Frankenstein last year. I loved it but too soon. Any interest in any of his old Universal buddies: Dracula or Mr. Hyde or The Invisible Man? Shelley's book was so different from the films, it has me wondering how the other guys look on paper

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I nominate The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells.

Bigollo Greg wrote: "I nominate The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells."

Do you consider it a horror?

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

The Purloined Letter by Edgar Allan Poe is not a horror story, it is a detective story.

Yes.

Fair enough. Many a book can be considered a horror, and so can life. Incidentally, The Kreutzer Sonata reads as a sheer horror.

It is not pure horror but it is horror nonetheless and very much in the vein of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Bigollo A suggestion.

Let's stop the escalation right now. Isn't it obvious it does not lead to anything good?

It may be hard to suppress one's emotions. But there's no dialogue any more. A mere downward escalation.

After some effort upon yourself and some time passed you two might find a chance to say something kind to each other.. But please not now!. Please cool off first...

TMHO we can afford being irrational on this blog, it's very human.. but we still should try to be tactful..

Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ Jenn Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ Schu (jennschureviews) Please remember that respectful behavior is a guideline of the group. All nominations are accepted by Laura and myself. The moderators will determine the book's read status. However, until then, please remember to be polite. This is a book club, meant to be enjoyable to all.

I read it for an English class and loved it...I don't think I would have necessarily picked it up on my own.

Let me know how you like those. I really liked Wells' The Time Machine and want to read more by him.

Margo I nominate dracula or the invisible man.

Allegra | 116 comments Since Margo's response, I took a look. Seems Dracula is a little long for our group, so I'll nominate The Invisible Man.

I liked all 3. Dracula was really good as was The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I liked The Invisible Man slightly less but it's still good.

Margo wrote: "oh 488 pages.... Much too long, sorry guys."

Oh, wow. I've read it but I never would have guessed that Dracula was that long. It didn't seem that long when reading it.

Another one of my groups is reading as a group read next month, if you'd like to discuss it in a group? It's a re-read for the group but the last time the group read it was several years ago so there's likely to be quite a bit of discussion.

Oh, Melanti, you're a member of that group, too? Me too! Although I have to say I hardly read any classics lately.

Or we could set up a buddy read? It would give me an extra push to actually read it!

message 27: by Melanti (new)

Melanti Elsbeth wrote: "Oh, Melanti, you're a member of that group, too? Me too! Although I have to say I hardly read any classics lately...."

I am a member but I really haven't had much time to read anything at all for the last couple of months.

In the last month, I've read just one full book, half of a second, and thirty pages of two others. I normally read 3-4 per week, so that's a huge drop!

Hopefully life will get a little more settled soon, and I'll be able to get back to reading.

Yes, that is a huge drop! I hope you'll find the time, energy and peace of mind to read more, soon, Melanti!
