You can definitely see a young man going to lengths like this for power. Especially at the point where he thinks of what his mother and brother have said to him.
He obviously feels that he has been left with no option but to pursue this cause of action. I'm not going to say he is going unwillingly, but it is certainly taking all his willpower to go through with it. That always throws a different dynamic at you compared with someone who is just plain evil and doesn't need a hint of persuasion.
Great prologue I love the Macbeth overtones and great imagery of the settings.
His mum has shaped his path and pushed him to take a direction he probably never would have thought of.
He is obviously not the favourite son but ultimately we make our own decisions for take responsibility for our actions.

Yea I imagine life around the dinner tables is not a fun time for poor old Evnis!

The year 1122 of the age of Exiles, Wolf moon.
So here we meet our first POV character called Evnis. He is scared and we find out what he is about to do will make him a traitor to his king...
We get little glimpses into the world the author has created. He is In the darkwood (which instantly paints a picture to me, kind of like Fangorn in LOTR) and he is walking on the giantsway. A flagstone road that connects two kingdoms, Ardan and Narvon. What's more, we find out giants built the road.
We get all this information before the end of the first page!
So what is driving this young man to betray his king in the dead of night?
Let me know what you think!
