Lisa | 617 comments I have always enjoyed a good mystery and even credit 'The Nancy Drew Files' as being part of the reason I am obsessed with books. Started reading them in third grade and read everyone our school library had. In junior high and high school I went through Mary Higgins Clark and James Patterson phases. However, after awhile many mysteries become slightly predictable, especially if you're reading a lot of a certain author.

There are some mysteries though that really stand out, whether it be because of an interesting twist, unique characters, a wonderful backstory or just plain good writing.

Two off the top of my head are..

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

and

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Now, I know you could predict what I am about to say Lisa... LOL

Kay Hooper's SCU series! Mystery with a supernatural twist. I love it! I love how the people who belong to the special crimes unit of the FBI all have psychic abilities. I am absolutely IN LOVE with this series! :)

gina~* | 39 comments more of a thriller I guess but The Cabinet of Curiosities by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. It is a book I will never forget & I forget books as soon as I put them down. Super cool twist.

I love that series! I am on Brimstone now. The Cabinet of Curiosities and Still Life With Crows are both some of my favorite books. :)

I also liked Relic and Reliquary. They are the 1st of the series. I love these books also.

BK Blue (paradoxically) No problem! It doesn't have the same characters as the previous ones though, because Agent Pendergast ventures into Kansas. Still a very good book.

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 188 comments I really enjoyed JA Konrath;s Whiskey Sour - Jack Daniels is a really interesting character.

stormhawk | 1184 comments Andrew Vachss Burke Books are my absolute favorites. They are a bit grim and gritty for most people, though.

I also like Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme books. The stories get really intricate, and Deaver does a good job with misdirection, keeping you guessing until the end.

BK Blue (paradoxically) I just finished reading Case Histories A Novel. It's not a pure mystery novel, it has family drama (for lack of a better word) woven into it. At times it had me laughing, and there were also a few times I could almost cry. I just wish I knew some of the English phrases they used in it though. lol

They ARE dark but I love them.

I'm sorry but that made me real thirsty.
And Joy, that sounds like something I'd like...I'll have to check out Kay Hooper.
