Kimberley | 9 comments Pretties by Scott Westerfeld, is the second book in his dystopian series. In this book, Tally Youngblood continues her adventurous journey. This time Tally has had the surgery and is a Pretty. After rescuing her friends from Special Circumstances she turned herself in so she could become pretty and help Maddie test the cure for the lesions that are put on everyone’s brain when they become pretty. The problem is that she forgets about that life and gets drawn into the life of being a Pretty. Until one day someone from her past shows up and gives Tally the cure to take and the letter she wrote to herself to remind herself why she needs to take it. Scared, she ends up sharing the cure with her friend Zane, who turns into so much more than her friend. Together they recruit more pretties in their group, the “Crims” and play epic tricks this time around. Zane and Tally also convince their friends to leave Pretty Town and seek out the New Smokies.
In this book, Tally’s friends Peris and Shay make their reappearance. Also Dr. Cable, Tally’s nemesis likewise turns up again. Things get very complicated with Shay and everything else in Tally’s life. As the saga continues, Tally’s life, as well as her friend’s has many twists and turns. There is never a dull moment in this portion of the series. That is why I enjoyed this book more than the first one. The first book in the series, Uglies is a good book. However, when it ended I immediately wanted to start the next book to find out what happened to Tally and her friends. The second book did not disappoint. Spoiler alert! You will want to start the third book right away as well. I know I did. This series is a good choice for secondary students. The book has issues that address things such as: self-image, the environment, friendship, betrayal, control, as well as the government to name a few. There would be many opportunities for projects with this series as well. I recommend the series to anyone who is looking for a dystopian light, pleasurable read. If you enjoy this genre, you won’t be disappointed.
