So, I'm sure like the rest of you, these are not my 100% sure finalized books for these topics. Oh Manda!! Harry Potter is new to you ... part of me would love to wipe my memory so I could read them all for the first time again. They're my all time favourite books, without a doubt. I can re-read them till the cows come home (which reminds me, I haven't read them for a while).
I must be an oddball. I don't plan out my list, but find books that call me as I go and then see where they fit in the list. That means I am usually not reading in the same order as everyone else, but sometimes I decide to color in the lines and read one at the right time.
Jody wrote: "Oh Manda!! Harry Potter is new to you ... part of me would love to wipe my memory so I could read them all for the first time again. They're my all time favourite books, without a doubt. I can re-r..."When Harry Potter first came out and was such a popular thing (I thought it was just a passing fad at the time), I refused to read the books or see the movies. It really seems like they've stood the test of time and will be classic though. I have a lot of friends who are HP fans, and I feel like I missing out on a lot of good conversations. So I figured now was a good time to get to know the boy wizard. I do worry a little bit though because this is something my generation grew up with, and we aged with Harry. I worry that I won't feel the same kinship or have the same love a lot of people seem to do when they started reading this as a child. We'll see though.
Jennifer, I absolutely LOVE your list! There are so many books on there that are in my top favorites. I hope you enjoy them and I can't wait to hear your reviews :D
Well, if it helps, I felt the same way - I didn't start reading them until the fourth book was already out, and I was about 25 (way past the target audience!). I had the fifth, six and then seventh books on pre-order, was lining up at sparrow fart to collect them and was well and truly the most excited person there - and the each time proceeded to take myself to bed & read them in one go. I can also vividly remember staying awake until about 3am with the third book because I just couldn't put it down. They truly are amazing books - there's a good reason why they're so popular. They're easily readable, but at the same time so complex - I've read that J.K. Rowling had a full backstory for each and every character that appears in the books, even those that just appear in passing, and I do think you can tell. The characters are just incredible. You get so attached to them, not just the main ones, but so many of them. Oh, I really hope you like them!
I just read the Harry Potter books this year and absolutely loved them! I don't think you can ever be too old for them!
I've gone back and forth about whether I want to read the Harry Potter books. A friend is obsessed with them so we've tried to do a marathon of the movies with her before but I always fall asleep :( Maybe the books would be better for me though

The first book is still fantastic Laura, but they do get better as they go along - but that (for me) seems only natural, as the storylines develop & you get more invested in the characters. You definitely need to read them all - you can't get away with skipping any of them.

Laura wrote: "I've heard that the first book is not nearly as good as later ones so I think that also discourages me. In case you can't tell, I am also trying to convince you to jump on the bandwagon! Lol!
Yes! They are really easy reads too - the last four books are doorstops, but I read each one in a day. They can be very unputdownable!

And The Road for hiking, because they do walk a lot. But you did say good fiction, and that's the worst pile of crap I've read for ages.
Jody wrote: "Laura wrote: "On another note, Does anyone know of any good fiction about baking or hiking? Obviously, for the hobby week :) I've already read Wild."Baking Cakes in Kigali (I have..."
Really? I loved The Road. What did you dislike about it? I had some initial issues adjusting to McCarthy's use of dialogue technique.
For me, as always seems to be the case with books I really hate, it was the characters. It was supposed to be this moving, poignant book about the father/son relationship yet I felt nothing at all between them. It dragged on for way too long, the ending was crap, the dialogue was woeful. I think it might have worked better as a short story, or at a stretch a novella. It felt like the bastard child of Hemingway & Nabokov - an awkward combination of stark narrative and pretentious flowery prose that just didn't work (for me).

That means I am usually not reading in the same order as everyone else, ..."Joy, I am the same way. If I tell myself I have to read a book, it becomes a chore! So I fit my to read list into the categories and fill in the gaps with books I would not have read otherwise. It is a nice way of working through your list but get the exposure to different books, too.
I love planning my list, but I found with this year's that my final books barely resembled my planned books. But that was half the fun!
I think I might see how far my Time Machine backups go and try and retrieve the original list to see how many books actually stayed the same. :)I do like planning it though, it gives me the impetus to read some of those books that have been languishing on my TBR list for years.
It gives me a broad outline. I think this year I am going to pick a couple of books for some categories in case I'm not in the mood for one that I chose. I think that was my problem this year. After you read a certain kind of book that makes you feel a certain kind of way, sometimes you want to change it up so it's good to have options. :)
Moved the final plan over to my 2016 Plan Thread in the new group!
Okay, here's my broad outline (with some blanks for stuff I've not quite figured out yet and some overlap for books that I just really want to read that fit multiple criteria). It's less of a plan and more of a list of books that I want to read that could fit each category. Also... it seems I'm really into books with "star" in the title. ;)
