Hello! Thought that a week before the read through kicks in, it might be a good idea to get to know one another :)

I'm Lulu, and I've never read a Pratchett book in my life. I've been meaning to for years, but never got around to it. I'm obviously very excited to get underway, and to be able to discuss these books either with those who know the world inside and out, or newbies like myself (or, I guess, anyone in between!).

I'm most looking forward to Pyramids and the Hogfather. The former because it's the one I always meant to start with, and the latter because it's my dad's favourite.

What about everyone else? Have you read Pratchett before? Is this not your first reread? Which books are you looking forward to most?

Gemma | 4 comments Similar to you, I've never read any Pratchett before but have been meaning to. No idea which I'm looking forward to the most as I don't know enough about the books.

message 3: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn I've been reading Discworld since my friend introduced me to the series about 7 years ago. There's still a few I haven't gotten to, but I decided I wanted to start over in publication order. I'm in the middle of The Light Fantastic (Book 2) right now, so I'll probably get on track with everyone for Equal Rites.

Some of my favorites are Reaper Man (first one I ever read) and Thief of Time. I'm still looking for copies of some of the "extra" books, like Science of Discworld and the children's books and such.

I'm excited to see the favorites the new readers will pick!

Josh Drost (drostjosh) | 2 comments Hey. I'm Josh and I started reading Guards, Guards a week ago, and it is great. Looking forward to reading them all over the next few years.

I do not really have a book I am looking forward to as I know almost nothing about the series.

message 5: by Joshua (new)

Joshua Wentz | 4 comments I started reading Discworld books this year in publication order, and am currently on Wyrd Sisters.

I'm interested in experiencing how Terry Pratchett developed in style and substance over the course of the books.

message 6: by Emily (new)

Emily Cragg | 1 comments Hi, I'm Emily. I've read a fair few of the Discworld books over the years, but never in order and I've missed many out.

Looking forward to re-reading some favourites and finding some new favourites!

message 7: by Jordan (new)

Jordan | 3 comments Hi, I'm Jordan. I've read a few books before but this is the first time reading them all.

I love the Tiffany Aching and DEATH archs and the one about the assassin.

message 8: by Colin (new)

Colin (colinoblivion) Hi, I'm Colin.

I read my first Discworld book earlier this month and it was Mort. It was recommended to me by a friend online as a good starting place. I liked it so much that I decided I wanted to read all the other books! So this group worked out perfectly for me.

message 9: by Dx (new)

Dx | 1 comments Heya, I am Draško!

I read all the books atleast 2 times, some more, but when I saw this group I was happy to get a chance of doing it again! Hope you guys love them all as much as I did. First two books are a bit harder to get into than the rest so please do not quit before you atleast reach number 4 or something :P My favourites are probably night watch books but it is so hard to pick after all this time.

A fair mix of different amounts of books read, which is nice to see! The more different ways we are approaching this, I feel, the more interesting opinions we'll see :)

Anyway, welcome everyone! Not long now before we get going, really. I think it'll be fun reading with you all.

message 11: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Rossi | 17 comments Hey I'm Rossi.

I've only read a few bits from Pratchett, and since his passing I've finally committed to reading through his works. I've only just started The Light Fantastic, which means I'm only a book ahead of the group.

Is anyone else collecting the gorgeous new canvas hardcovers too?

I've been a Pratchett fan for a while though, Good Omens being a favourite of mine for years. I try a read a little of everything and anything, but I love particularly love Gaiman and have recently smashed through the Dresden Files.

I'm really glad this group exists, and such good timing.

message 12: by Brett (new)

Brett | 4 comments I'm Brett.
Much like -from the looks of it- many of you, this will be my first experience with any of Pratchett's works.
I've never had much desire to read him until recently (mostly because I've been daunted by the idea of starting a 40+ book series), and no better time than now.

Hello, my name is Sam, and I started reading Discworld books in about 2002.

Since then, I have read almost all of them, a few times. I haven't read The Shepherd's Crown, I want to re-read the rest first.

I'm very fond of the Watch books, and the Death books, and well, most of them to be honest...

I truly hope that those of you who haven't read them before, love them as much as I do.

Where are these? I'm excited now. I haven't gotten any books in a while since I'm only missing one or two. Are they the ones on discworld.com with his coat of arms and such?

An example of how they look, they look even better in hand.
They are available pretty much everywhere online, and at my locals. I buy from bookdepository. The first one has a blue cover (which is my least favourite, but I love a complete collection)

I'm intending to collect these too. I checked and it looks like the first 20 or so have been released in this style to date.

Also hello. I'm Ian. Much to my shame I've not managed to read Pratchett as yet, so this is as good an excuse as any to start.

Christina Pilkington | 9 comments Hi! I'm Chris. I have been interested in reading the Discworld books for a few years now, but running across this group is giving me the push to start now. I've had the Colour of Magic on my Kindle for a while so I'm excited to start. I think I'll be a bit behind everyone for about a month since I have a few more books to read for BOM/buddy reads in October, but I hope to catch up with everyone in November. So excited!!!!!

message 18: by Marcin (new)

Marcin | 2 comments Welcome Chris! I already started reading the series and am about to finish book #5 'sourcery', but am sure everyone will catch up with me soon as it does not go as fast :)

Hi Chris! Glad we could give you a nudge!

what's the BOM / Buddy reads you mentioned?

I'm in quite a few fantasy/science fiction groups here on Goodreads. In one group we're reading A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet which has had fantastic reviews! I'm also going to be reading Alloy of Law which I need before I can get to my pre-order of Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson.

I have received so many awesome books for my recent birthday, that I honestly get a little overwhelmed when I look at them because I want to read them all at the same time!!!

message 21: by Karina (last edited Nov 05, 2015 03:08PM) (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 1 comments Hi! I just stalked Lulu in here through a review of the Light Fantastic.

I've read all of Discworld and most other Pratchett things. I started reading them about... 16 years ago, yikes. I had a couple of years - a while back, now - in which crappy illness had me brainfogged a lot, and I could not read and comprehend anything - except my Discworlds, re-read over and over. They helped a lot! (Cue sentimental Pratchett-fan breakdown.)

Uh, well. Most of my old paperbacks have been lost in various house-movings, so I've been collecting the new, beautiful hardback editions (published by Gollancz), and they're oh so pretty, and I clearly have to read them again. Doing it with a group would be nice!

I especially look forward to the books with Susan, and the auditors, and Mr. Teatime, and the witches, and the watch, and... so on.

(Oh, might break reading order just to get to spend time with the Hogfather for the holidays.)

Hey, welcome Karina :) We're hoping to do 2 a month over summer (May-September), if the rest of the group are up for it, which should put us at reading Hogfather by next Christmas, but yes, definitely move them around if you want it for this Christmas!

The Gollancz hardback editions are so lovely, I might just have to splash out on those - thanks for the heads up!

message 23: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 1 comments Hi everyone. I'm Chris. Lulu mentioned this group when I told her I was (slowly) reading through these. Great idea! I've read through Sourcery in order, so I'll look to jump in with the group about March or so when we start Wyrd Sisters.

Igy The Book Hermit Hello, I am Kevin "The Book Hermit". I love the Discworld series, the first two books not as much. My first book read was "Men At Arms" and I never stopped reading from the series. I look forward to reading all the books in the series.

message 25: by Chantal (new)

Chantal R (amazon42) | 3 comments Hey! I'm Chantal. I recently discovered the Discworld series, and LOVE IT! I'm just finishing up Equal Rites. Is this group still going, anyone still here? I found this group via the subreddit, but there doesn't seem to be any activity since last year.

message 26: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Rossi | 17 comments Hey Chantal, the group is unfortunately pretty dead. I'm still keeping tabs on the group, and I'm still reading (and loving) the books, but not to the month by month schedule. I'm just about to start reading Moving Pictures!

I would be keen to start the group up again (maybe if the mod could give me a little power?) because these books are great, and I would love to discuss them again.

message 27: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn Yeah, I still have the notifications set up, and I'd love to continue. My intention was to do a second reading in publication order so I can get the whole story roughly in order. Unfortunately, my house flooded and my books are gone. I've been collecting the discworld collector's library bindings as they publish though, but they haven't gotten far enough to keep up with a book club reading pace. Maybe we can restart?

message 28: by Aisling (new)

Aisling | 1 comments I've been keeping an eye on the group too hoping it would restart. Love a chance to read them all again/discuss.

message 29: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Rossi | 17 comments Thats pretty rough, I can understand why you stopped. You lost all your books?

I'm keen to do more, to do a restart. Maybe hunt for some fresh blood to kickstart the group again.

message 30: by Jordan (new)

Jordan | 3 comments I'm still here and got side tracked so never got past the first 6 due to exams and me forgetting but I'd love to start again if some other people were. (I can get the person who runs the subreddit to get that moving again if anyone wanted?)

Yeah, we had 3.5 ft of water. The only books that survived were some special ones I kept on the top shelf. I love to get to recollect discworld collector's editions though. Have you seen them? There's pictures on the Terry Pratchett website if you haven't, updates page I think.

message 32: by Chantal (new)

Chantal R (amazon42) | 3 comments Aw Kaitlyn, I'm so sorry to hear that. I love all my books so much I would cry! I haven't seen the collection you are looking for, but I'll keep my eyes open for you.

message 33: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn Thanks, Chantal. The new books are pretty. It just takes a while to get them since I've only found one place that sells them to ship here. Maybe the few of us can make a new group?

message 34: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Rossi | 17 comments Kaitlyn wrote: "I love to get to recollect discworld collector's editions though. Have you seen them? There's pictures on the Terry Pratchett website if you haven't, updates page I think."
Oh! I'm collecting the same ones! They are stunning. I'm up to Moving Pictures myself, but the stories are fresh enough in my head.

If its too messy for a reboot here, a fresh start on a new group would be fine by me.

message 35: by Marcin (new)

Marcin | 2 comments I am still here too, currently finishing 'Soul Music' and loving it. Happy to get the group going again, be it here or a new one 🤙🏻

message 36: by Chantal (new)

Chantal R (amazon42) | 3 comments Kaitlyn, Amazon.ca sells the ones I think you are looking for. Not too sure where you are located, but you could always try and see if they will ship to you.

message 37: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn Oh, right, I forgot Amazon shows different options for different locations. I'll take a look at that!
