Book Lair discussion

Has anyone watched the movie?

I am sitting in the movie theatre waiting for it to start!

Ok so I actually bothered to take a few notes of what was different in the movie than the book.

(view spoiler)[For some reason the start day was 18 instead of 6.

Evacuation was ordered by Lewis instead of Houston (I guess to make her feel even guiltier for leading to Mark being stuck)

The log was in video instead of written.

Kapoor got in contact with Mindy, in the book he didn't know her before she made the discovery that Watney was alive.

The Aquaman joke was lost.

I wish I had seen Watney's struggle with the Rover and being stuck in it for all that time.

There was no eulogy to duct tape.

No communication due to Pathfinder failing was completely removed.

Beck groping around in space without a tether was positively ridiculous. If his hands failed to grip it, off he would go into space.

Watney taking off his seatbelt and holding on to the opening in the hull.. Come on, this is space, people!!!

As a sci-fi movie it was still ok, despite those lame few things.

As I figured would happen though, Watney was lost in translation.
He has been one of the characters I most enjoy reading due to his humour. The movie Watney was so weak comparing to the book one.

And I never really felt the despair that I did in the book, not only because a movie is limited in time but because some of the most despairing situations were either removed or changed.

I still enjoyed the movie very much and recommend it.

I commented in another thread that I really, really enjoyed the movie. Kind of (view spoiler)[ spoilerish: I felt almost guilty for the expense associated with saving Watney in the book. That was removed from the movie so I was able to root for his rescue with no guilt. I can't say that I would be able to justify the billions spent if I'm honest. (hide spoiler)]
