I've seen that a lot of people like this book. Hopefully they were right.

Ch. 5

I didn't read the synopsis before starting this book so I had NO idea it would be about women as property...ugh!

Serena's dad (view spoiler)[disgusts me. I know the time and world are different from mine, but what kind of father would say to Thomas, "Here is your property"? I literally did a little gasp at those words. Then he spells her to punish her and breaks her leg but doesn't fully heal it? I can't stand him! (hide spoiler)]

Thomas (view spoiler)[is despicable too> I don't see this as a budding romance at all. At least I hope not! He seems to be the barbaric one. (hide spoiler)]

Envadi (view spoiler)[(is that it?) so far seems to be the only decent one since he came to Serena's defense and decked Thomas! I'm sure there is more to him, but so far of the male characters he's the only one I can stomach. (hide spoiler)]

Even though I hate how (view spoiler)[the women are treated and that the men are awful, I am enjoying the book. I like the writing and I'm drawn into their world. (hide spoiler)]

Serena will have a hard time being a (view spoiler)[kick ass heroine in the world in which she currently is. But she has to be or this book/series will be pretty miserable. I hope she finds a way of escape! (hide spoiler)]

Yeah, it will be pretty miserable. I wonder if she will go the way of the tarnished or whatever they called them. Her poor sister all alone with their dad :( yikes (hide spoiler)]

I'll be on the road tomorrow driving alone so won't be able to read anything till tomorrow night.

Yeah, her sister (view spoiler)[is one character I like. She seems a little more level headed or at least more careful than her sister. I feel for her being left alone with the dad too but they are two of fourteen girls, right? So were they the last two? I don't recall if it said. (hide spoiler)]

I was able to read Ch. 6

I was not expecting (view spoiler)[ Thomas to die!!! I was glad until they announced Chancellor Zade. Ugh!!! Could this be even worse for her?! (hide spoiler)]

Serena's father (view spoiler)[ really upset me when he called his daughters HALFWITS but then had the audacity to say Zade could not have her? Why does he care since the girls seem to be only property and a means to money or status? I really loathe him! (hide spoiler)]

Finished Ch. 10

OMG I can't believe that (view spoiler)[Serena found that library and just had to steal a book! That is SO like a book lover though. I am worried if she'll face punishment for it once he finds out, if he does. (hide spoiler)]

Serena is definitely (view spoiler)[a bit snarky even though she tries to be submissive to Zade. But I worry that in this book it will catch up to her and she's going to catch all hell soon. I'm a bit afraid to see what happens. (hide spoiler)]

I don't know if Zade really cared or not but (view spoiler)[he didn't really seem to care that Serena wasn't wearing make-up and he almost seems to even like her confrontational nature and that she's a bit mouthy, or he's letting it build up. I hope he's not as bad as Thomas and her father made him out to be. (hide spoiler)]

Finished Ch. 15 OMG!

This has gone (view spoiler)[from bad to worse! For half a second I thought Zade was going to turn out to be a good guy, but the minute he began to treat Serena like his property and turned ugly, OMG! Leashes? Slicing her? Humiliating her? I can't believe how awful, cruel, and humiliating he is!!! Ugh! (hide spoiler)]

I am still a little conflicted because Zade began (view spoiler)[doing things that showed him to be a total jerk and then he does something and I think he's going to start being nice. I'm not sure why I feel that way, but I keep thinking "OK here's when he is going to turn nice." I can't imagine the fear and horror she has gone through and feels. (hide spoiler)]

Phyllis (view spoiler)[might be punished for what she's done. I wonder if Zade will make her leave, punish her, or God only knows does what to her! (hide spoiler)]

Being (view spoiler)[branded like cattle...I know it really has happened in history but I still can't fathom that at all! (hide spoiler)]

he wanted to talk to her, wanted to know more about her. I think he is just as worried about his ownership as she is
I don't think his people "own" women like this one does and he only did the ceremony and marking to make her people happy. I don't think they do this in his area and he's still trying to figure out how this works
I think he fought Thomas and killed him in order to save her from him. (hide spoiler)]

Zade(view spoiler)[ poor guy, he's really thrown into all this. he seems to be struggling and I'm sad he had to break off his engagement. (hide spoiler)]

Waverly(view spoiler)[ I think she's a good example of the choices that women have. but I'm not sure why she's there. Sister to Zade? Cousin? Friend? She's someone....I'm just not sure how she's connected... (hide spoiler)]

Katherine(view spoiler)[ I think this dress/seamstress storyline is a little odd and I'm not terribly excited about it but I guess we'll see how it goes (hide spoiler)]

Dad(view spoiler)[ I can't lie, I'm glad he's not first and center in the story anymore (hide spoiler)]

Serena(view spoiler)[ I'm sad that only Cynthia appears to have figured out that Zade isn't "waiting to punish her"...he's just a young guy trying to figure out what he's doing in a hostile foreign country and trying to stay alive and run this household and the other job Thomas/Jacob had (hide spoiler)]

Just finished the book. It was a good read. Exciting and lovely. I cant wait to read the next one.

I agree Trisha. As I said I was having conflicted feelings about (view spoiler)[Zade but I just didn't see him as a totally bad guy. I think your insight is good and I'd agree because he just isn't bad like Thomas was (hide spoiler)]

Waverly (view spoiler)[is a mystery to me too because it's obvious to me that she is definitely "someone" as you say, but I don't know who either. My first though was his sister because he definitely cares about what happens to her. (hide spoiler)]

Serena's dad (view spoiler)[was/is awful! I'm glad he's taken a hike for now too! (hide spoiler)]
