Would That Was Then, This Is Now be considered a sequel to The Outsiders? I definitely like the latter over the former, but the former is good, even though the ending is kind of ridiculous.

Sequels? Do you mean book series in general or just books that are number two in the series? For me, Stieg Larsson's second book (The Girl Who Played With Fire) is better than the first one. For series, I adore Bujold's Vorkosigan saga. Lord of the Rings is my absolute number one, but I don't think it counts as a series though.
