I love to read family sagas! I tend to fall in love with characters and with a family saga you get to visit those characters throughout their lives in many cases. The one that comes to mind first is Sara Donati's Wilderness series which was discussed a few podcast episodes back. There are 6 books in the Wilderness series which begin with Nathaniel, Elizabeth and follow them into old age with the later books focusing more on their children and grandchildren. The newest book The Gilded Hour follows their ancestors I believe.

I loved this episode because it brought back a lot of authors names that many of us saw. For me it was Michener. I might have two of his books and the tv version of " Centennial" was one of the best ever created.
Another recommendation for a family saga trilogy is Celeste De Blasis' Wild Swan and the books that follow.
Just listening to this episode today and all I remembered was the Winds of War books by Herman Wouk. I was a kid and watched the miniseries on tv and then read the books (although there were only 2 so not sure if that counts).
I'm so behind in my podcast listening! A couple I can think of are:Bernard Cornwell (http://www.bernardcornwell.net) - I've read most of the Sharpe Series and my husband has read The Last Kingdom series. (we're also watching this.)
Dorothy Dunnett (http://www.npr.org/2014/12/27/3717109...) The Lymond Chronicles
The rest I thought of are sci-fi (having read 96% of the Star Wars books and now having to reconcile myself to a non-Hans-&-Leia world....)
