I am the kind of person who wishes everything was in its place, but doesn't do what it takes to keep it there.
I'm an everything in its place person. My DVD's, cd's and *books are all in alphabetical order.
I try and keep Brian's x-box games in order, but he keeps messing them up. :(
*Why are books all different sizes? It's hard to keep them in order when some are too big to fit on the shelf!

Nonfiction is sorted by subject, fiction is sorted by size, and the older books I collect are sorted chronologically.
I have my own system as well. Ordered by genre first then by author if there are many by the same author (which there usually are) then by book size.

We tried to keep our bookshelves organized, but it isn't easy. When we made the decision to foster cats in 1999 it became almost impossible because cats don't believe anything belongs where humans put it.
Cats have five categories for items that sit on book shelves:
This item is the rung in my ladder on my way to the top and therefore will end up on the floot.
This item is my launching pad as I leap across the room and therefore will end up on the floor.
This item is in my way and therefore belongs on the floor.
I want to get my human servant's attenttion and this item's fall to the floor will serve that purpose.
This item belongs on the floor.
Fortunately the advent of digital books and Apple TV solved that problem for us. We no longer buy hard copy books and we buy movies and TV shows on iTunes. When we can't buy the movie we rip it to mp4 and put the discs in storage or, if theyre suitable for children, send them to my son and his granddaughters.
