The romance itself never felt natural to me. Vampire king is forced to transition a girl then falls desperately in love with her for no other reason than how wet she gets for him. The girl, sees him, and is instantly sex-driven after 25 years of asexuality and sort of just goes with it. The only real motivation she had to stay with him was the mystery of her father (who she never knew), the Colonial houses, the butler and all that money! Oh, and the fact he kept locking her in his room.

But romance is romance. They fell in the love. They overcame obstacles. They lived happily ever after.

As a paranormal romance it had much more sex than my regular historical romances. While there were a lot of scenes, they weren't necessarily great. There definitely was some humour in it, regardless if it was intentional, "When he came, he felt like he'd been ripped in two, the bursts of energy creating a shock wave that went through the room, shaking the furniture, blowing out the candles." He literally came so hard the candles went out. Like whaaaaaat?!

The aspect of the book that excited me the most?...

THE BROMANCE.

Jeez it's dripping with bromance. What else was I expecting when the series is called "Black Dagger Brotherhood".

Basically, there is a small group of super testosterone crazed men running around killing people who smell like baby-powder, aggressively sexing all the womens, and being overall manly together. They describe each other with such lust I'm wondering why women are in the plot. It was pretty hilarious. 7 grown vampires, hundreds of years old, sitting in a Colonial house, wearing their leathers and throwing stars, listening to Jay Z and D12, sassing each other while they drink Scotch from the bottle. Picture that for a second. It's a little weird, right? But I dug it.

But when it comes to Wrath, oh boy! The band of brothers revere him. When he decides to take the thrown they instantly bend to the knee and Wrath's all flustered, like "Omg guys... this is so sweet. I can't believe you all believe in me so much! <3 I'm so worthless but I'll try to be the king you need." Let the bromance begin!

Even with this bashful Wrath running around, there is one thing that would have made the book better: as a reader, I like to be shown instead of told. I'm sad how much authors and characters keep boasting how bad-ass other characters are without giving readers examples. Like we're supposed to take their word for it. I know there are 14 (I think?) books in the series, so there is plenty of time to show readers what these boys are made of - but it still disappointed me a tad.

I swear there were 500 pages of "these guys are so bad-ass, nothing can stop them, nothing can reign over them, gosh all mighty they're so independent and merciless and no one can control them, the only thing stopping them from murdering, raping and pillaging the entire planet is nothing cause NOTHING CAN STOP THEM RAWR..." But all they did was SASS.

They're all up in each others faces but they never actually do anything. And the one time you think someone might FINALLY show how murderously soulless he is, turns out HE WAS FAITHFUL AND LOVING. NO. He's not even supposed to like his twin brother for fudge sakes... well that's what they tell me :\

Oh! Yea, so moving on to the bad guys.

They were boring, uninteresting, and weird. Not the good type either. I wrote about them in the halfway through review and nothing changed - instead I stopped reading their parts. They do make a new meaning for "Jar of Hearts" though!

Overall, Dark Lover is a good start to the series. It sets up a couple story arcs for later books, keeps readers interested with their diverse brotherhood members (a type for every girls fantasy), and enough hilarity to keep me coming back. I'll definitely read the next in the series, but I'm in no rush to start. A solid 3.

Best Quote "And Vishous, while he didn't have Hollywood's outrageous good looks, had plenty of pimp juice." Thanks Wrath for that apt description!

Kristen | 14 comments What in freaking hell is Pimp Juice.

This book sounds like a delightful disaster. The Bromance would be the one thing that kept me reading as well, Anita Blake books are good evidence of that. I read 13 books all because of Jean Claude and Asher.... god dammit so many regrets.

I understand the need for action, it sounds like she spent the whole book setting up a story for the book you have to buy next. I haaaate when an author does that (-cough- The Others -cough-)

Once again your review made me laugh especially this bit:

"Basically, there is a small group of super testosterone crazed men running around killing people who smell like baby-powder, aggressively sexing all the womens, and just being overall manly together"

Can't wait to read your next review!

Tina | 48 comments I loved this review. Now the book is another thing....
Baby powder LOL
Was there even a plot to this or just a quick porno? LOL

Review: 5 stars
Book: half a star Well was the cover good?

Kayla Read (k_laread) | 21 comments Technically there was a plot. After the first two sex scenes they became generic 'then they had sex' kind of write up.
