I had a very interesting thought today and wanted to pose the question to the group and see what you all had to say. Is there an author you have read or still currently read where their writing has progressed or changed over the course of their books? I use to be an avid Mary Higgins Clark reader however I fee like her plot lines got repetitive. Every few books started to feel like a recycled story line from one of her previous books. Eventually I stopped reading her. I am currently a huge Jane Green fan. Her books have evolved with each work. When I first started reading her she was filed as a chick lit author. And while she can still be filed in the category, she covers real topics that happen every day. I Look forward to each one of her books to see what she will give us next. There is no predictability in her writing and as an avid readers that is exciting.

Nicholas Sparks is one of my favorite author. But after reading the last novel of his, the best of me , i seriously needed a break from his books. In most of his books, one of the leads usually dies .
The key is not to do a marathon of the same author's novels , even if the author is your favorite .You will pretty much get bored of the writing.

I have read my fair share of female oriented books, or books by women that have female protagonists. I think marathons are a good way to judge any book series. It's a kind of acid test.I used to read a lot of cozy mysteries. Only a couple of these series stayed fresh after the 12th or so installment. Guilty pleasures should remain guilty. It's only when they are guiltIER that you can bet your bottom dollar that something's not quite right.
The fact is, anything done beyond a limit loses its appeal. Unless you are motivated to read everything by your favorite author, do not invest so much passion in him/her. Exercising too much of anything brings diminishing returns. E.g, actual exercise; half hour of cardio will do wonders for your health. 45 minutes of workout will give you healthy perks. But trying to be a nut about any domain will bring in diminishing returns.
The secret of reading is perhaps to know everything about one (long running) series. At the same time, read something from a whole lot of series. Become a know it all about one author, then diverge as much as you can.
I guess John Green is one author whos books follow almost the same story line. Two teenager fall in love, one of them dies\ disappears \ is upset and the other falls in love even after those problems. I always try to search something new but his book always sound the same. And other author, Jacqueline Wilson's books always revolve around problems face by orphans or kids with sigle mother or any other family issue, and her book always have something different and I love that fact :D

Someone always dies in his books so I find myself crying (usually on the train while I am on my way home). But I agree about not marathon reading sometimes. Although I have done the marathon reading when the author has a really great series.

With my reading sort of being varied, I haven't encountered that problem yet. I do have my favourite authors, and I carry on enjoying their books. Though one time, I read Stephen King's series 'The Dark Tower', and I basically read them right after each other, and after that, I had to have a bit of a break from his books, but I do enjoy his books and still want to read the ones I haven't read yet. Wilbur Smith I've also done that with, with the 'Egyptian' series, so now I'm taking a slight break from reading his books as well, though I have also enjoyed the 'Hector Cross' series, and I'm hoping that there's going to be another book in that series since there was a lose end in the last one.

Maybe Harry Potter Can be exception . The stories are new in every book of the series. I will gladly do a marathon of HP series :)
