Betsy | 348 comments I was reminded by our theme from September that I wanted to read several banned books last year. It escaped my mind. This time I want to make sure I get them read. Here are the books from the Top 100 Most Frequently Challenged List that I wish to read by next year's Banned Books Week.

The Giver (The Giver, #1) by Lois Lowry The Giver by Lois Lowry

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

Betsy | 348 comments If anyone would like to read any of these as well, I can make threads to discuss the books.

Maybe I can get it from the library. I have a copy out of state. I'll keep you posted.

I put up a thread so no need to keep good notes. :)

I finished Bridge to Terabithia, but I think I'm going to put off Catcher in the Rye because of the "Less than 1 star" comments! ha!

I'm interested in The Kite Runner... gonna go pick it up!

Happy Day,
rift

Jill V (artsyjill) | 168 comments if you like coming of age books along the lines of the perks of being a wallflower, catcher in the rye is a great book.

Betsy | 348 comments I could not get The Kite Runner from the library. Weird! Anyway, I will have to wait until I visit my Mom.

message 8: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 348 comments I have The Giver here and can start whenever you wish Bettergloves.

Here is the thread for discussion.

Jill V (artsyjill) | 168 comments Bettergloves, I'm glad you liked it as well. I read catcher in high school but thinking about a reread. I've also never read the giver or kite runner and interested in both. still have a few books in my queue to read but will definitely check out the threads when I get a chance to read them. this is a great idea Betsy!

Betsy | 348 comments This is so funny. I put up this thread expecting to read these in 2016. I am planning my goals for next year. One is to read several of these challenged books. Now The Handmaid's Tale is being read as one of the BoM in another group. There goes my plan. Ha!

Here are some additions I made since I might read two more in my original list this year. I already read The Giver.

Challenge Books -- Banned Books:

The Color Purple by Alice Walker
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

Betsy | 348 comments I have finished The Kite Runner and the entire Giver series. Next up is The Handmaid's Tale. Hope to finish it by end of September for my personal goal of reading books discussed to ban.

I didn't know that either, and I had just finished a lesson with my sophomores about Banned Books. I have been wanting to read Cuckoo's Nest for a while.

Think it more challenged. Sorry for the confusion. I am happy to say that I did finish One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Unfortunately, I did not care too much for it. Found it rather slow. Probably just me. I did get it of my list though. 🎉 Gotta think about what to read for next year. Thinking The Diary of Anne Frank.

Betsy | 348 comments Although I had several books from challenged lists on my radar to read, I have been a slacker. I am FINALLY going to start The Handmaid's Tale. 🤦🏼‍♀️
