Hi friends!

This is just a thread I am opening to post news and updates as I have them. I don't expect people other than myself to post in here, just to keep things organized and neat.

I will start a Questions thread here as well in case you have questions, comments or concerns you'd like to voice in order to make this group better.

Thanks again for all your participation! And bear with me as I continue to help develop this group. I'll be working on organizing the folders/threads in a better, more understandable way. So if you have trouble finding something, feel free to message me. Also if we aren't already friends on here, don't hesitate to send me a request!

Happy reading,
Max

MichelleG (michellegreiss) Hi Max, would it be possible to send a email out saying the March book picks will be based on the long list. I've been thinking I missed an email with the book picks, and I just saw the note in the questions page about the long list.

Apologies in advance if this was sent and I just missed it.

Kelly | 6 comments Wondering if anyone has read 'A Tale For the Time Being' by Ruth Ozeki. It was a 2013 Man Book finalist. Thoughts? I will be starting it this weekend.

Julianne Quaine | 35 comments Yes I read that and really enjoyed it. You can read my 4/5 review on Goodreads

For me it was ok - a 3/5 read.

Anyone surprised for the short list. I have read them all and the choices were among my favorite although can't say I enjoyed Eileen. . .black noir but I still think about the book so what does that say?

I absolutely loved it but then I am kind of a science geek

message 18: by Neil (new)

Neil Hi all - this isn't Man Booker related but I think will be of interest to several people here. If it's inappropriate, let me know and I'll delete.

Last year saw the inaugural Republic of Consciousness Prize for Small Presses in the UK. These presses are producing a lot of innovative fiction and are often not able to enter the big prizes like the Booker (which costs a lot of money!).

I can confidently state that the long list (scheduled for December) will be strong this year.

There is a fund raising page where you can support this prize and have the opportunity to be entered into a raffle to win books (and other prizes, I think).

Just to say - as it came up on another thread - if you win the raffle, the books will be shipped worldwide.

Dyzelle | 6 comments I read A Tale for the Time Being when it was nominated and really enjoyed it! It was a book club pick and I'm not sure I would have picked it up otherwise, but I'm glad they chose it!

Hi Kelly, we usually start deciding around the 20-25th of each month for whatever we will read the next month. We will know by around 1 week before the month ends. Hopefully that gives you enough time to get it from the library :) Then you have the whole month to read whichever book we select.

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... Thanks! I am rural, so my library usually has to find it from somewhere else. But I am a fast reader, so I should have some time.

Looks like the 50th anniversary of the Man Booker Prize is bringing out some cool events! This one in particular—the Golden Man Booker: http://themanbookerprize.com/news/gol...

Judges pick the contenders and readers vote for the winner! Cool!

"The five books will then be put to a month-long public vote from 26 May to 25 June on the Man Booker Prize website to decide the overall winner, announced at the Man Booker 50 Festival on 8 July 2018."

This will be an excellent opportunity for us. Now we begin wishing that they'll select our "favorites," right? Happy reading!

C I N D L E (cindle) Hello.
I joined the group back in December and I'm sadden to have this subject be my very first post I share in it. The mods have not brought it up so I thought it pertinent to share it, after I saw the announcement on Twitter last night.

It was announced last night/today, January 27th, 2019 that the association between the Booker Prize Foundation and the Man Group is coming to an end.

Doug Just FYI, as we're almost a month away from the 2022 Booker longlist announcement, I went ahead and created the Listopia for NEXT year's eligible books, which can be found HERE: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1... - feel free to add any titles which MIGHT be worthy, keeping in mind eligibility requirements.

John (kiwiinhove) | 7 comments I finally read the first Man Booker winner. A story told with wry humour and poignancy. Edwin Fisher has left his wife Meg and decides to spend a week on holiday where he went as a kid with his family.

The story is a slow burner but kept me interested with the humanity and the interplay with other people. Class rears it’s ugly head and the struggle for people to find meaning in their lives.

I would be interested in other people’s views of Holiday. I was pleasantly surprised after reading several negative reviews.

Brad Waller (bradwall) | 13 comments I keep looking for a copy of this one at my local used book stores, but the used book gods have not yet provided. It's the last on my Booker TBR list and has been a white whale for some time. Curious if you found yours locally or ordered off of AbeBooks or another online seller?

John (kiwiinhove) | 7 comments I got mine online. I think it was ebay and cost £3.
