The Sound Catcher by Graham Garrity
Here's a short excerpt.
As Chloe watched, the strange cloud darted towards the elderly couple. Suddenly the woman began to scream and shielded her head and face with one arm while flapping the air frantically with the other. Quickly the old man removed his overcoat and threw it over his wife’s head then he too began to flap wildly with his cap in an attempt to drive away whatever it was that was tormenting them. And all the time the dog chased round in circles, whining piteously.
Chloe began to panic. ‘What’s happening?’ she said. ‘What are they doing?’
In reply the Sound Catcher pointed to three young boys who were cycling towards the elderly couple on their mountain bikes. Without warning the first boy let out a yell and tumbled from his bike. Unable to avoid the fallen bike the second boy clattered into it and he too took a tumble. Not wishing to suffer a similar fate, the third boy turned his handlebars sharply and sped off down the hill.
The Sound Catcher found the whole scene hilarious and his lanky body shook with laughter.
Chloe was horrified. ‘What’s going on?’ she said anxiously. ‘What’s the matter with them?’
The Sound Catcher took off his wig and used it to fan his face, which was now quite red, and then began to massage his ribs to ease away the pain of all the laughter. ‘Phew, that’s the best yet,’ he said breathlessly. ‘I love it when something like that happens.’
‘But what is happening?’ said Chloe. ‘I don’t understand.’
Still chuckling, the Sound Catcher scratched his head and then replaced his wig. ‘They think they’re being attacked by a swarm of bees,’ he said, and made a buzzing sound whilst wiggling his fingers in front of Chloe’s face.
‘But there’s not a bee anywhere,’ said Chloe, scanning the sky nervously just in case. ‘The only thing near them was that small cloud.’
‘What cloud?’ said the Sound Catcher, suddenly very serious.
‘The yellow and black one,’ said Chloe. ‘It drifted right over their heads.’
‘That wasn’t a cloud,’ said the Sound Catcher. ‘That was the stray sound. That’s what they could hear.’
‘That’s amazing,’ said Chloe.
‘What’s amazing,’ said the Sound Catcher, ‘is that you could actually see it.’
‘I’ve been seeing lots of them, ever since my accident,’ said Chloe, pointing to the lump above her eye.
‘Then that explains why you can see me when no one else can,’ the Sound Catcher whispered to himself. ‘I’ll have to do something about that.’

Bullies, Ghosts and Jars Full of Smoke by Graham Garrity
Here's a short excerpt.
My parents are always telling me that education is important and I should try my best to learn something new every day. Well they’d have been proud of me today because I learnt something I’ll never forget: The playground of Stowmere Secondary School smells like sweaty trainers and when you’re sucking it up through your nostrils because someone’s size nine is on the back of your head it really hurts!
The reason I came to be pinned to the playground by a size nine loafer was because of what Lenny Spencer did in the Science lesson.
The lesson was about how to test for acidity and alkalinity using universal indicator solution or litmus paper. For some reason Mr Wilcox decided it would be a good idea to test the pH factor of saliva and chose Spencer as a guinea pig.
Wilcox held a glass beaker in front of Spencer’s big gob and told him to dribble into it. Spencer, being the show off that he is, decided that dribbling was for babies so he hawked up a big grolly and spat. The trouble was it missed the beaker by a mile and splattered Wilcox’s wristwatch instead.
Apart from Wilcox, who looked like he was going to be sick and waved his arm about as though it was being attacked by a giant green jellyfish, everyone in class burst out laughing. But I laughed loudest of all and almost fell of my seat.
