Fantasy Book Club discussion

I'm interested in more fantasy/SF from the 70s and very early 80s. I love stuff like Thomas Covenant and Book of he New Sun, Birthgrave by Tanith Lee, etc.

Looking for some good but obscure stuff. Lost classics.

That was an interesting time.

I just recently finished The Faded Sun Trilogy and was really impressed with the worldbuilding. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like the political maneuvering bits, though, as there's lots of that. And although it isn't fantasy, it reads like epic fantasy in that fashion.

More 80s (and possibly 90s) than 70s, but I'd recommend checking out Jo Clayton and Louise Cooper, especially Cooper's Time Master trilogy (The Initiate, The Outcast, The Master).

Oh, another one, this one more late 60s/early 70s -- Jane Gaskell, author of the Atlan series which began with The Serpent. (Note that in some later editions, The Serpent was split into two books: The Serpent and The Dragon. The rest of the series was Atlan, The City and Some Summer Lands.)

A bit strange...but I remember that it was difficult to put down as a teen.

well, you've already read some Tanith Lee... so few people know her name! I'm impressed. her Secret Books of Paradys were quite interesting if you have read them yet.

And check out Piers Anthony ... something that's not one of those pun infused myth books.

For classic 70s SFF I'd certainly take a look at Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber series. I also have fond memories of reading C.J Cherryh's books in the 80s, particularly her Chanur series. Another 80s author I loved was David Brin and his Uplift novels. A final favorite who wrote many of his best works in the 70's and 80s was Larry Niven (often partnered with Jerry Pournelle). He's probably best known for his Known Space series (particularly Ringworld) but he wrote a number of good books outside this setting, too.
