SandyL | 4754 comments Hi Team!! Welcome to Team Brighid!! We are going to have lots of fun. Where are you all from? Have you done this challenge before? What do you like to read?

I'm from Southern CA and this is my first time with this challenge. I did do the Gladiator Games which was so much fun! I read romance, mostly erotic but also some pnr, historical, chick-lit, etc and will occasionally read a mystery or other genre for a challenge. I love seeing where everyone is from - it makes me want to travel!!!

message 13: by Kate S (new)

Kate S | 1998 comments Yeah, new Tower Teams! Getting exciting!

Thank you for the background information on Brighid, certainly not anything with which I was previously familiar!

I am Kate. I live in Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. This is my third tower team (I skipped the third one) and I have participated in several of the other team challenges in this group.

My preferred reading is literary fiction, but I enjoy a wide variety of books. I have a mixed bag from the library right now of non-fiction, mystery, new literary fiction, classics and world fiction.

I am also an avid sports fan and find myself choosing sports related fiction and non-fiction when I get a craving. During the winter, that is likely to mean a lot of golf reading. :)

Heather | 529 comments Hi Team Brighid!!!

I live in Houston, Texas with my hubby and 3kids. I did thid challenge last time BUT I came in halfway through as a replacement. Because I didn't start with that team I felt a little lost when it came to the mini challenges. I loved the challenge I just wish id been there from the beginning.
I mostly read New Adult, Young Adult, Paranormal Contemporary Romance and Horror.
I don't like Historical Fiction, Science Fiction, Urban Fantasy, Non Fiction.
Depending on whats going on I read between 2-4 books a week.
I'm really excited to play this time!!!

SandyL | 4754 comments Hi Kate & Heather!

I used to live in NoVa, Kate. Is it starting to get cold yet?

I haven't been to Houston, Heather, but I have a friend who just moved to Katy, which I think is in that general are? I hope to visit her next year and would like to see Houston.

Hi all!

I'm in the UK, and this is the first time I've done this challenge. I did do the Gladiator Games, tending to just read what I fancied, letting them fit to goals later. I really enjoyed the chat, which is why I signed up for what i hope is a less hi-intensity game :)

I read all sorts, latest books being sci-fi, modern lit, nonfiction & historical fiction. You are very unlikely to find me reading horror, sport or self-help.

I do the Seasonal Reading Challenge, so i have a fair amount of my to be read books locked in already :/

And can't wait to get started here!

message 17: by Kate S (new)

Kate S | 1998 comments That's funny, Sandy, I used to live in Southern California. It is cold today, but should be in the 70s by midweek. The leaves have just started to change and it's looking like it should be a beautifully colorful autumn.

Hi Catherine. I am also in a seasonal challenge, so I have lots of books already planned to read. I found I could move the order around enough that I did not feel locked in during the gladiator games, but with the speed at the end of that game, it was almost better to just read and let cards fall where they would.

message 19: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4754 comments Hi Catherine! I'm doing the SRC too, but don't really have a plan. I've found books for most of the categories and try to fit them in with other challenges.

What part of the UK do you live in? A long ways back I lived in Cornwall for a year. It was pretty, but so rural and I definitely realized I was a city girl at that point! Of course now that I'm older, I wouldn't mind it so much.

I miss the leaves changing and the spring flowers. It's been so hot here, although it's cooled down the last couple of days (to the 70's/80's) - back to the 90's the rest of the week.

Hi Sandy, I'm in London. Cornwall is lovely, but it IS about as far from city living as you can get (in England at least!) I like spending time in the countryside but love living in the city!

And, as someone who's dealing with wet weather, can we keep bragging about hot weather to a quiet murmur?! :P

message 22: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4754 comments LOL Catherine. I'm not bragging...I'm complaining!!! We are in a huge drought here and would love, love, love rain. Although certain areas got some rain last week and it turned into massive mudslides that still have some roads closed and cars stuck.

message 23: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10292 comments Mod
Ah, yes, sorry. We Brits love to complain about our variable weather, but we forget about you guys with more extreme weather.

message 24: by Heather (new)

Heather | 529 comments Actually I just moved to Houston 7 yrs ago. I was born and raised in Baltimore Maryland. I desperately miss Baltimore.

Sandy, Houston is ok. If I didn't miss home so much I'd probably like it more. I used to ask my husband, who's from here, questions about Texas life. Eventually, he said You know we don't ride horses to work. We drive cars. Lol

message 25: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4754 comments What always made me laugh about Virginia and Maryland was that it was like going to another country crossing the bridge into MD! So close and yet so different!

message 26: by Heather (new)

Heather | 529 comments Its been in the high 90's here. I miss seasons too. Its really just seriously HOT and slightly Cold at winter. I do kinda like wearing sandals in December-February though!

Catherine, I LOVE rain and dreary weather. (Best time for reading!) I always thought I'd like to live somewhere with that type of constant weather.

Hi team Brighid!

I'll be your mod mentor for this challenge, so if you have any issues or questions you can send me a PM or you can find me over on Team Flidais.

I'll try to check in often. Have fun! :)

Kate S | 1998 comments I know there are still 10 days left before the challenge starts (!?!), but is anyone reading anything fun? mind-blowing? terrific? terrible? Anyone else hording long books for next month?

I'm watching for books that meet some of the harder goals (the list is out in the All About Goals thread). Otherwise I'm reading some of my shorter books right now towards other challenges I'm doing - since I'll try to read longer books once TT starts. It starts on Nov 7th, so a bit longer than 10 more days :-(

I just finished the last in the "Ancillary" series - Ancillary Mercy
I loved all three of them. The first, in particular, was outstanding, and I loved the use of "she" as the generic gender assignment throughout.

I've now started Cress, which is a nice change of pace :)

but I'm not really hoarding long books - I try to complete all the tasks on the SRC, which means I need to do some planning ahead, and I tend to use mid-length books, generally.

And timing of my holiday has mis-fired - I'm off all next week, so will get a lot of reading done - all wasted as far as Team Brighid is concerned - sorry guys!

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi all!

I'm Lori and I'm also in London. Waves at Catherine.

I read lots of genres but like mysteries best. I don't like romance so good to see others here do in case we get any romance related goals.

I'm hoping the rain will keep away over the next week or so as my landlord is getting the roof replaced at the moment.

I'm in a Halloween related challenge in another group at the moment but I'm not doing so well at the moment because I need to read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell for it. I'm really enjoying it but it's so long.

message 32: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4754 comments This is my second time doing the SRC, but I think the tasks are harder this time than the last. It takes so much time trying to find books that fit the tasks. I'm pretty sure I won't get as many points this time.

Hopefully the rest of our team checks in soon - its so quiet!

Hi Lori! Whereabouts are you? I'm south London, which is great for reading- plonk myself down on the bus, bury my nose in my book and read until I get to work. None of the horribly uncivilized tube straphanging for me, thank you very much!

Sandy, I know what you mean. I felt like I'd copped out with my task (international travels), but I am glad that i went the easy, laidback option, looking at some of the others, they are tough! Personally I am detesting the grape one and the Melbourne one. I hate the options that are coming up for those!

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm in North London. I also work in the Borough where I live so don't have a long commute.

The north-south divide is funny. I'm working with a consultant who lives in the far south of London and a lot of my colleagues act like it's another country. They can't believe he travels 'all that way'.

I haven't done SRC in awhile. I'll probably start again next season. I don't mind the harder tasks as I never get close to completing all the tasks anyway. I just miss out the ones I find harder.

SandyL | 4754 comments Hi Lori! Sorry I missed your post yesterday - welcome! My cousin and his wife are going to London for Christmas and I'm dog sitting for them. I'm jealous! I've heard it's really pretty that time of year.

yeah, if you don't mind getting very cold & wet! or wrestling tourists out of your way.

uh... I guess you'd be the tourist here... sorry! I am sure you'd be a well-behaved tourist, and not one that stops in the middle of the pavement with no warning and then looks outraged at me when I bump into them!

[gets off soapbox, sheepishly]

message 37: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4754 comments Too funny Catherine! Yeah, that would probably be me. Thankfully you get my cousins, who spend a lot of time there and I'm sure are much better behaved!

Hi! Had a quiet evening reading. I finished The Children Act, which was classic McEwan, and recommended. I've just started Happiness by Design: Finding Pleasure and Purpose in Everyday Life. Nothing better than curling up in a comfy chair, hiding from the wet Autumn weather & reading interesting books :)

How about you? Plans for the weekend?

message 40: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4754 comments I'm reading Around the World in Eighty Days. I can't believe I have never read this. It meets a couple of challenges, and thankfully I'm enjoying it. Very entertaining!

I've never read that one, though I remember watching the cartoon when I was young. Does that count? To be honest, I read 20,000 Leagues recently, and didn't get on with it very much, so I won't be racing to pick up another Vernes. Glad you're enjoying it :)

message 42: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) | 1302 comments Hi everyone. Sorry I'm a bit late in checking in. Had a busy few days.

I'm Vikki from Northern Ireland. I think I've taken part in all the Tower Team challenges although I joined the last one late. I read a mixture of genres but this year has been mainly crime & thriller. Last night I finished The Night Stalker which I really enjoyed, although it's not for everyone, especially if you're very squeamish. I've just started a cozy mystery, Murder is Binding to tick off New Hampshire for another challenge I'm doing. Afterwards will be a halloween themed book, Trick or Treat

message 43: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4754 comments Hi Vikki - welcome!!!

message 44: by Amy (new)

Amy (traveller2014) | 122 comments Hi everyone,

I'm Amy from Scotland. This is my second tower teams and I'm looking forward to it getting started. I read a variety of genres and reading seems to be on an upwards curve so hoping I can help out a bit in the challenge in terms of length of books. Good to see a range of people and readers here!

message 45: by Amy (new)

Amy (traveller2014) | 122 comments One Breath Away by Heather Gudenkauf
currently reading this and The Art of Being Deaf A Memoir by Donna McDonald -surely this demonstrates the variety of my reading genres?

It's been a while since I took part in the Src too, but I did enjoy taking part in it. Perhaps I'll take a look at the Winter tasks & consider re-joining. My problem is in December I tend to read a LOT of seasonal books. Although last year I read a few seasonal crime/thrillers which was a change to the usual chick lit style seasonal books. I had said I wouldn't buy any more, but then I saw a few that grabbed my attention in the shop today, & I already bought another 1 a few weeks ago. Oooops

message 50: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4754 comments I feel your pain Vikki! You never know when you'll need one for a challenge, right? And having a selection is important 'cuz sometimes you don't feel like reading certain books. Or maybe there will be some type of disaster that you are stuck at home and if you don't have extra books what will you do? :D - I can think of all kinds of justifications for buying more books.
