As I was reading the novel, I felt sad. I felt sorry for Rose even though she was doing the best that she could in a difficult situation. I thought the interest in homonyms was really kind of interesting. It seemed OCD but I found myself trying to think of homonyms . Although her father wasn't very likeable, I think he was trying to deal with his wife's death and raising Rose on his own. My question: do you think he would come back? Should he? Or is Rose better off with her uncle?

Rose's fathers frustration was real. I listened to the audiotext version of the book and got chills sometimes when he spoke or responded to Rose. I think Uncle Weldon would be more patient and understanding to Rose as she grows up.
Although he didn't handle Rose well, I think he did know what to expect from her. And although he couldn't provide what she needed, I think he knew what she needed. It was just difficult for him to admit to himself that he wasn't it. I don't think he will ever assume primary guardianship of her again, although he may return to her life at some point. Thank goodness for her sweet uncle! Not a lot of 31 year-old bachelors would be like him!
I felt as if her uncle was actually more of a father to her. He seemed to understand her so I agree with you he would be more patient.

My favorite part about their relationship was how he accepted her for who she was, homonyms and all. :)

But after a while, it really became part of Rose's character and made her believable. I definitely think it was a conscious decision to speak that way.
I believe that it is a characteristic of autism to have little voice inflection because of social disconnect/emotional intuition, so the audio reader must have done a nice job!
