~Australia Day Mini Challenge~This is an OPTIONAL mini-challenge for our Tower Teams which will run from Jan 1 to Jan 31, 2016
Australia Day is the official National Day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, it marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales
How to Play
◈ Your team will be given a crossword puzzle with 6 facts about Australia.
◈ We have created three different puzzles with varying levels of letter difficulty for the teams at the top of the overall leader board, (puzzle A) middle (puzzle B)and lowest (puzzle C)
◈ Once you have the 6 answers, these become the words your team needs to “spell-it-out”
◈ For each word completed, you can choose a book read by your team in December to claim DOUBLE POINTS for (page points only, not goal points)
◈ A book can only be claimed for double points once. (i.e. you can't use the same book of 130 points to keep doubling)
◈ Each spell-it-out word can only be completed once for double points
◈ Books read AT ANY TIME during the challenge can count for the spell-it-out , but DO need to be separate books from those you claimed for goals.
◈ The usual book length rules apply, Books must be more than 100 pages in length and Children's books and Graphic Novels can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 25,000 words using arbookfind.com
◈ Spreadsheets will be updated for the Captains to update and track the teams points
Spell-it-out rules
Using the first letter in the book’s title, the first letter in the author’s first or last name, or the first letter of a character’s first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter in the audiobook narrators first or last name.. As always, if the first letter of a title starts with ‘A’, ‘An’, ‘The’, etc., you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word.

Hi! I'm Anna and I'm your Team Captain! I'm excited to start this challenge and getting to know you all, or know you better!
Hello Anna and Victoria! Thanks for taking the reigns of our team Anna. :)This is my first challenge with the group, and I'm excited to get started. You can see from my read shelf that my tastes are very eclectic. This has been my best year EVER for books. I'm sitting at 300 something so far this year. Can't wait until the challenge kicks off!
Oh, and here is a link to the shelf I will be using for the challenge:https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
It's so empty, but it won't be in a couple weeks! :)
Hi All,I'm excited to join in for my first challenge with the group. As a "newbie" I am still trying to navigate this huge site of GR, lol, i.e. how to make lists, join in the fun, comment etc.
Thank you Anna for coordinating everything.
HI! I'm Karrie and I have done a few challenges. My reading can be hit or miss. Sometimes life gets busy. I LOVE to read, and will do my best!
PS. I'm excited that our team has seals, walruses, and a beluga! Super cool!
I have several ocean and sea related books that I've been sitting on for awhile. I'm going to move them to the top in honor of our mascot. :)
Hi team! I'm so looking forward to round IV starting. This is my favourite challenge (I've participated in all the previous rounds). I'm sure we're gonna have a lot of fun!
maria helena wrote: "Hi team! I'm so looking forward to round IV starting. This is my favourite challenge (I've participated in all the previous rounds). I'm sure we're gonna have a lot of fun!"I hope so! :)
maria helena wrote: "Hi team! I'm so looking forward to round IV starting. This is my favourite challenge (I've participated in all the previous rounds). I'm sure we're gonna have a lot of fun!"Well then I will definitely be relying on you for rule clarification! I have never played this before and I am very new to this group so I'm learning as I go! Alena was wondering if she could start adding books to her shelves now or if she should wait until the challenge starts. What do you think?
Anna wrote: "Alena was wondering if she could start adding books to her shelves now or if she should wait until the challenge starts. What do you think?" She can start adding books that she is planning to read for the challenge, BUT any books started (or finished) before the challenge starts will not be counted towards our points.
Which time zones are everyone in? I think we're all in North America, but that can still span a wide range. I'm in HST.
maria helena wrote: "Which time zones are everyone in? I think we're all in North America, but that can still span a wide range. I'm in HTZ."I'm EST. Ohio actually, but I work mostly midnights, so my hours are ALL over the place.
How many are we waiting on still to check in?
Hi everyone! I'm excited for this one. I love challenges, but I've never participated in this particular one before so I might have some questions too. I'm in Chicago. I work mostly nights too Daphne, so I'll be the other person leaving messages at odd hours of the day =)
Laila Jane wrote: "Hi everyone! I'm excited for this one. I love challenges, but I've never participated in this particular one before so I might have some questions too. I'm in Chicago. I'm in EST, but I also work nights. I have plenty of access to a computer, in which I can spend an ample amount of time on goodreads while at work. In fact, I may be at work now...
Austin Texas here; CST, a retired R.N., and sometimes "Sleepless-in- Austin" so I might chime in on some late night chats with you 3rd shifters :)
And I was worried I would always be out of sync with the rest of you. I'm happy at least part of the team will be awake at the same time as me :-)

One of the great things about this challenge is that it is ok if your reading varies from week to week. It's not the end of the world if you're reading a little less one week :-)

Great! One thing that I appreciate about the team challenges on NBRC is the support from the team. It is not like that at every challenge group!

Splendid to hear. That's why I'm so happy to have found this place through Cathy M.
So what is everyone's go to genre?
Mine is normally the odd one out in any challenge group. I read more non-fiction (mostly science, history, and biology) than anything else. I do dig me some epic and dark fantasy though.
My favourite genre is mysteries, especially British and Nordic crime, but I also read some sci-if, romance and historical fiction (or whatever I feel like).
My favorite is probably fantasy, but I love just about every genre. I've randomly been reading a lot of romance books this year, which is a genre I used to dismiss. But now I can't seem to stop reading them.

Anna wrote: "I completely understand you. I can't seem to stop reading paranormal romance. But I'll read pretty much anything. (But a romance helps :)"Have you read Kay Hooper's books? I usually don't read a lot of paranormal, but I really like her paranormal romance series.

I haven't! What is it?
Hi everyone! My first challenge as well. I'm near Seattle so it looks like I might be weighing I'm a bit later than you all. :) Looking forward to some good chats!
Alena wrote: "Hi everyone! My first challenge as well. Turns out most of us are total night owls, so we'll probably we around your time if you keep a normal schedule. :)
What's your favorite, go to, genre?
Oh good. :) My go to genre is fantasy, urban fantasy, thriller. Jordan, Sanderson, Chainani, Harrison, Meyers. If it's good I'll stay up all night.
Hi, all! I'm a co-captain. I have done all of the Tower Team challenges, I was a captain last round, so Anna, just let me know what I can do to help you!I'm near Seattle, too. I live in Federal Way, WA. I enjoy reading just about anything. It's easier to say what I'm not interested in trying out, then to list all of the genres I enjoy!
