Diamond Drake (diamondthewriter) | 152 comments I was just informed that I'm required by law to include that I received a book as an ARC when I write a review. I've never heard that, but it doesn't mean it's not true. So I thought I'd ask because I can't find anything on the web which states that and I'm extremely curious to know what law that is. I see readers state that they received an ARC but I never thought there was a legal reason for it.

Julie | 192 comments I don't think it is a law, although I could be wrong. I include it because I saw others include it and thought it was honest. If you leave a review on Amazon regarding a sample product that you received for free, you aren't required by law to give that information. It doesn't make sense that resources would be used to track this and give a penalty for not including it. I doubt it is a law.

Diamond Drake (diamondthewriter) | 152 comments I just had this forwarded to me from GR review guidelines . . . "Commercial reviews are not allowed and will be deleted. If you received a free copy of the book, you are required to disclose that in your review in compliance with federal law."

Who knew?

☆Joycedale☆ I don't see why that needs to be a law

My hubby and I were just saying the same thing. I'm trying to figure out what difference it makes.

Sarah Oxford (sarahloxford) | 1260 comments I can see that they don't want authors to 'buy' good reviews. I'd always put a disclaimer on books I'm given for review because I don't want to be accused of being biased. I had no idea it was law though but then I'm not in the US.
I might try googling this later, it seems odd to me.

Diamond Drake (diamondthewriter) | 152 comments Well, according to the Federal Trade Commission and the Bureau of Consumer Protection we're supposed to do this for ALL products we receive for free! I had no idea!

Julie | 192 comments Wow! I had no idea! Thanks for finding out for sure and letting us know. I'll make extra sure I include that statement from now on.
