Myers,Dean Monster New York, New York: HarperCollinsPublishers,1999 The main theme of this book is what happens when you give into peer pressure. Walter Dean Myers displayed what giving into peer pressure does to you in this book. The main character is a Harlem boy named Steve Harmon. He is an oridinary black, Harlem boy just trying to live his life as a modern New Yorker. Even though this book is fiction, it still proves a serious point about the young black boys in Harlem. It proves that they are often easily stereotyped for things that they don't even do. They are also just at the wrong place at the wrong time and pulled into a situation they weren't even suppose to be involved in just like Steve in "Monster." On page 152 the judge says," The question is should we believe such a man, who goes around, selling cigarettes, that connect him with the crime, after Mr. N. was killed?"(pg.152)Basically the judge is just assuming that Steve, the main character, is involved with this crime just because of the way he lives and carries himself. Overall I think that it's a great novel to ivest your time into reading. It has very relatable topics, and there is never a boring part in the book.
