I can't believe March is almost over! I thought I would get the discussion going. The Persephone Forum has already discussed this book, so there are some great comments and resources on this page: https://www.persephonebooks.co.uk/con...
How does this story relate to class issues and feminism?
I liked a blogger's question mentioned in the forum: "Why must Emily be so accommodating all the time? Because it is her nature, or her only guarantee of survival?"
I felt like Emily was a fish out of water when she became the Marchioness. Her survival mode was not to make waves. One thing I didn't appreciate was the way it was always alluded that she was not too bright. I think she just did not have the social skills to adapt to her new lifestyle. Her husband and Aunt were not supportive either. I enjoyed the book very much.
