Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ รђ๏รђคภคђ (shoey924) | 53 comments I've heard of 3 but someone said the author is putting out a 4th, I think.

Get out of my head Leanne! Literally, these were the exact books I was thinking of when I read the topic. NICE PICKS!

Shelli Jo wrote: "Ive nearly finished the summoning and its pretty good :) "

Jo...did you like The Summoning?

message 12: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Zombies seem to be in right now. Lots of books about them around.

message 13: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I'm doing a buddy read of Handling the Undead...I think it is zombies...I'd really like a good ghost story though!!

message 14: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 29 comments I'd recommend Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin, it's not a zombie story but a vampire one with a bit of twist to it. I thoroughly enjoyed it myself :-D

Earlier this year I read Tales of Terror from the Black Ship by Chris Priestley, which, although it's written for children, was very enjoyable and perfect for a ghoulish halloween night in.

message 15: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I have Fevre Dream on my TBR!

Sam (ecowitch) | 29 comments Shelli wrote: "I have Fevre Dream on my TBR!"

Well I hope you enjoy it Shelli, best set aside a day or two for it, I found I didn't want to put it down when I started it!

message 17: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Sam....I've got to finish A Clash of Kings first!!

Sam (ecowitch) | 29 comments Shelli wrote: "Sam....I've got to finish A Clash of Kings first!!"

Well at least the always difficult decision about what to read next should be a bit easier then :-)

message 19: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I have a huge TBR...it's always hard!!

Anthony Buckley (anthonydbuckley) | 4 comments Oscar Wilde's "The Canterville Ghost" is entertaining. It's reminds me a little of Mark Twain's "Connecticut Yankee".

message 21: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 44 comments The Haunting by Shirley Jackson
The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

both brilliant!

message 22: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) One of the best ghost stories I know of is The Waiting Room! FAB-U-LOUS!

message 23: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) I recently read Brodmaw Bay by F.G. Cottam, the same author as The Waiting room (the last ghost story I recommended). It is excellent!

message 24: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 44 comments I will have to give FG Cottams books another go I think - I read The House of Lost Souls a couple of years ago and thought it was rubbish!

I guess we are all different, I was recommended Apartment 16 by Adam Nevill by lots friends who know my taste, but I really couldn't get on with it at all! Ghost stories especially are hit and miss.

message 26: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 44 comments I've read Apartment 16 too - didn't rate it at all - however I won't rule out giving his other stuff a go.

I thought Apartment 16 by Adam Nevill was rubbish too. If you want good ghost stories try E F Benson, old ghost stories and creepy - 'Hauntings & Horrors: Collected Stories of E F Benson' is £1.40 for Kindle from Amazon UK - it has 54 of his stories!

I'll keep a look out, thanks.

Sam (ecowitch) | 29 comments Has anybody read The Woman in Black by Susan Hill? I noticed that there is a film version coming out soon and it reminded me how brilliant a story it is. As ghost stories go it's a classic, I loved it when I read it (in fact I loved it that much I bought my own copy since I had only borrowed it from the library).

message 30: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 44 comments I loved The Woman in Black - its one of the few ghost stories that really scared me. I'm looking forward to seeing the film sometime - I have also just bought (Ebay) a copy of an earlier film version but haven't watcched it yet. I'd love to see the stage version too. Fantastic book!

message 31: by Karen (last edited Jan 20, 2012 06:17AM) (new)

Karen (kazzakrisanna) I have The Woman in Black on my TBR Maggie, I might bring it to the top of the pile after your recommendation - I love a good scare

message 32: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) Karen - thanks for the recommendation, just downloaded Hauntings and Horrors.
Sam - Susan Hill is one of my favourite authors, Have you read The Small Hand by Susan Hill , I think it's every bit as good as The Woman in Black A Ghost Story by Susan Hill

message 33: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 44 comments I've also read The Small Hand -very good too!

You're welcome Chris.
I quite fancy reading Susan Hill, but which is best to start with?

message 35: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 44 comments I'd start with The Woman in Black - particularly as the new film is about to be released.

message 36: by Karen (new)

Karen (kazzakrisanna) Thanks Maggie - will do

I haven't, I've read The Mist in the Mirror, which I loved. I'm keeping an eye out for her other works though (may have to hunt the Small Hand down)

message 38: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarah23l) I read The Woman in Black a couple of weeks ago after seeing the trailer for the movie. It was creepy, but the movie - which I saw last night - was way creepier!!! I am going to check out Hill's other books after reading the recommendations here.

message 39: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Has anyone read The Prince of Mist?

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarah23l) Shelli wrote: "Has anyone read The Prince of Mist?"

I haven't read it, but I bought it for my daughter a while back. I don't think she's read it yet. I'll have to ask her...

message 41: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Just finished The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian. If you're looking for a modern ghost story, you might like this one.

message 42: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) I read prince of the mist a while ago, after falling completely in love with shadow of the wind and angel's game. It's very creepy, but much simpler and shorter than the the others, but then it is aimed at a younger reader. Definitely worth a read!

message 43: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 44 comments I'd like to read The Prince of Mist - absolutely adored The Shadow of the Wind.

Good to know....Thanks Chris!

message 45: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) Just finished another of Susan Hill's ghost stories; The Man In The Picture. It's the third of them I've read and once again, exceptional

message 47: by Isaac (new)

Isaac Toit (isaac_du_toit) Seven Ghosts Seven Ghosts by Chris Priestley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I did not see the ending coming. This is a spooky and slightly mysterious story about a boy called Jake who goes on a tour in a magnificent old stately home called Grimstone Hall but not everything is as it appears. The house is haunted by seven spirits each with there own tale to tell. This is a fabulous short novel by Chris Priestley.
