The Story of the Lost ChildProgress Post:
- What are you reading this week (Week 3)? The Story of the Lost Child
- What is the genre of the book? Contemporary Women's Fiction
- Why did you choose this one? I have been eagerly awaiting reading this book released in Sept 2015, the last of the four Neapolitan novels by Elena Ferrante. Each one is so rich in narrative and plot and filled with multi-dimensional characters.
This final novel covers the story of two girls' friendship, as narrated by one of the girls, Lenù, as they head into middle age and their older years. The four novels span several decades, from the 1950's onward, and touch on such diverse topics as education, writing, poverty, feminism, Italian politics and corruption, marriage, adultery, children, romance and sex.
For me, the best part of these novels is how the author flawlessly portrays Lila and Lenù's often difficult and complex relationship and the nuanced feelings they have for one another. Just like real life! These are novels - this is writing - unlike anything I've ever read before. I will be quite sad when this book and the series ends.

What are you reading this week? The Old Wives' Tale by Arnold Bennett
What is the genre of the book?
Historical Fiction and a Classic
Why did you choose this one?
It came to me from BookBub and sounded quite interesting, as it seems to compare and contrast the two women, the mid-Victorian era and the modern Industrial Age. Also, I have just finished reading about two old Athabaskan Alaskan women and want to see the world from old English women's eyes now.

Reading Split Second.Science Fiction. Time travel.
I love time travel stories. Especially the ones that get down to the meat of it and really play with the mechanics. This book sounds promising. Time travel by fractions of a second? Should be interesting.
Sophie wrote: "This book sounds good Adam! I'm waiting for your thoughts before adding it to my TBR."So far the writing is horrendous, but I'm hoping it gets better once the action starts. I still have hopes that the concept will be enough to carry it. It has to be a best seller for some reason.

What is the genre of the book?
Young Adult Contemporary, according to GoodReads
Why did you choose this one?
I spent a while debating what I wanted to do with this category. My PopSugar Challenge this year already included a prompt for a book from the library, which was basically a free choice category for me since I get the majority of my books from the library. I had been strongly considering doing the rejects challenge over a few years, but was struggling because there were just an overwhelming number of prompts.
In the end, I decided to take my three favourite prompts from the "rejects" list, and fit them in as my reader's choice, my previous suggestion that didn't make the list, and a wild card in addition to the other books that I read.
The prompt that I settled on as my reader's choice was "A book published in a significant year for you." I really wanted to read this book since hearing so much about it last year, but never found a place to squeeze it into my previous challenge. Even finding a place for it this year was a bit of a challenge, and a straightforward "reader's choice" seemed like a cheat. I chose this book because it was published in 2014, which is when I started my full-time job at the organization that I had been hoping to work for since I was in high school.
What are you reading this week?Lazy B: Growing Up on a Cattle Ranch in the American Southwest
What is the genre of the book?
Memoir
Why did you choose this one?
It's the first book I've read this year that doesn't fit any of the remaining open prompts on my plan, so I put it in this category.
I already read a book for the memoir category because I adore memoirs--I read a lot of them. Same goes with the nonfiction category.

Why did you choose this one?
So it is 3:30 in the morning and I have read 600+ pages in 11 hours. It is our March book club selection, I wasn't even going to read it at all, because it didn't sound like anything I would like. Huh. Shows you what I know...

What are you reading this week? The Shadow of the Wind

Why did you choose this one?

- What are you reading this week? All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
- What is the genre of the book?
Historical Fiction
- Why did you choose this one?
Because it is the most popular book from 2014 and I still haven't read it! I have officially stopped buying books because the amount of books I own and have yet to read is kind of tremendous. So between those books taking priority and the fact that this book is still too popular that I have to be on a waitlist to borrow it from the library, I have not gotten around to it before now.
- What are you reading this week? The Darkest Corners by Kara Thomas
- What is the genre of the book?

- What are you reading this week?Less Than Angels by the marvellous Barbara Pym
- What is the genre of the book?
Comedy of manners; gently sardonic observational comedy
- Why did you choose this one?
I stumbled upon Barbara Pym completely by accident with Excellent Women and since then I have also read Some Tame Gazelle and Jane and Prudence.
If you have ever lived in a UK village then you will recognise many of the character types that Pym writes about. Her books are set in the 1950s but the parochial attitude in the books is still very much in evidence where I live which is why what her characters say and do makes me laugh so much - I feel like I know quite a lot of them!
I love Barbara Pym too! I re-read Excellent Women and Jane and Prudence every few years. This year I'm re-reading No Fond Return of Love.
I think Barbara Pym is such an underrated author. She just makes me crack up - like in Some Tame Gazelle where one of the nosy neighbours pops round and traces her signature into the dust on top of the piano just to quietly point out the narrator's slovenly cleaning ...
W00t, last time I'm answering my own questions :p- What are you reading this week?
These Vicious Masks
- What is the genre of the book?
Fantasy, probably more on the urban fantasy side as it's in London.
- Why did you choose this one?
I wanted a 2016 book and I'd a children book as my 1st choice, but the price is still too high, so I switched it with my Suggestion that didn't make it (a 2016 debut) as both are in this category. Otherwise, the blurb seems interesting, I like the cover and one of my friends is pretty enthusiastic about it :)
What are you reading this week? NYPD Red- What is the genre of the book? Mystery
- Why did you choose this one? I don't know was just looking for a new book and this one sounded interesting.
Sophie--thanks! So far I'm enjoying the Shadow of the Wind. I'm about halfway through. The author has a Shadow of the Wind walking tour of Barcelona on his website so I'm looking forward to doing it. I was browsing through this thread and am now ready to try out Barbara Pym!! I'd never heard of her but luckily my library has a few of her ebooks. This challenge is such a great way to discover new authors!
This week I am reading My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. This book was selected by a member of a book club that I am in. I am excited to read a book written by an Italina and set in Italy. There are 3 more books in the Neopoitan Series which follows the life of two friends who grow up in Naples.

It looks like a fun book. I enjoy fantasy with female leads and I've been reading mostly literary fiction lately, so I wanted to mix it up with some fantasy.
