Callisto stood over what seemed like a never ending pile of dishes, up to her elbows in suds while drowning pots in practically boiling water. It was another cool day, but as usual the kitchen felt 30 degrees hotter than the rest of the house. She vehemently attacked a blackened pan with a sponge, cursing as soap landed in her eyes.
Addy hummed softly while she watched the servant girl scrub the dishes. She grew mesmerized by the constant rhythm. Grab dish, splash, scrub, again. She felt a pang of pity, and then made herself visible. Addy took a breath, though she didn't have to, and stepped forward. She tapped the young woman's shoulder. "Need some help?" She asked.
Callisto whipped around, brandishing a ladle. "Who dares- oh, hello, of course you may. God knows I need it." She huffed angrily, her bangs flying up and to the side.
Addy jumped back, eyeing the ladle, when she remembered it couldn't hurt her. She picked up a dish and started to sing as she scrubbed, still eyeing the ladle. "I'm Addy. What's your name?" She asked.
"I'm Callisto, but call me Calli- everyone does." Callisto told the small girl, handing her a rag to dry off some plates for tonight's dinner. "I'm feeling awful chatty today," she remarked,"Normally I would've screamed at you or thrown a bottle of soap at your head. Are you new here? Haven't seem you 'round, though this place is swarming with staff."
Addy blushed, knowing if she'd done those things they would have gone through her. She started to dry a dish. Then she set it down. She twisted the hem of her 18th century style dress, surprised she hadn't commented on that. Addy bit her lip. "Um... Well..."
Callisto took a look at Addy's clothes. "Those look awful old." She commented, putting up a platter. "Now, there's a lot of rumors circling around about this old place, but they're all cockamamie if you ask me- spirits? Ridiculous." She shook her head and returned to scrubbing. "Fools in town just get bored and make up lies..."
"Heh heh heh, yeah....ridiculous lies...." Addy laughed nervously. For a moment she lost concentration and a plate fell through her hand and shattered on the ground. "Oh my goodness I'm so sorry." She backed up, until her back was to a table. She lost her footing and fell straight through the table, landing under silently. Addy scrambled to her feet, her head and shoulders going straight through the table.
Callisto took no notice of Addy until she heard the plate shatter. "How dare-" she began to screech, until she saw Addy half way through the table. "What on earth?" she managed to stutter out.
Another nervous laugh. "It's.... Er... Long story short, erm... The stories of the spirits aren't necessarily lies or stories...." She started to gather up plate shards. "Because it they were lies...... Um.... I wouldn't be here...." She murmured nervously.
Callisto stood in front of Addy firmly, refusing to believe the girl was a sprit. "Stop telling falsehoods!" She demanded,"And, if you were a spirit, how would you help me with dishes? Very funny magic trick." Callisto frowned and turned back to the mountain of dishes.
((Sorry I posted but it didn't go through, apparently))Addy stamped her foot, but not giving the effect she needed. "It's not magic it's true. How do you even explain this?!" She asked, exasperated. She cringed, then spat bitterly. "I am dead. I was... Hanged..." She sniffed. A tear rolled down her cheek. "It was... I was accused..." She started to cry. Addy slowly turned invisible. "There." She choked. "Believe me?"
Callisto frowned, poking at the air, but she couldn't feel or see Addy. "Odd." She muttered, before her eyes rolled back into her head and she fell.
Addy reappeared when she saw Callisto drop. She screamed. "Oh my gosh!" She focused hard to be solid, and managed to shove her hands under her head before it hit the ground. "Wake up, wake up!" She was about to do CPR, but remembered she couldn't breath. "Callisto!"
Callisto's eyes flew open, and she scrambled away from Addy. "Why are you here?" She ventured to say. "After all, why haunt this decrepit, once grand manor?"
((Uh sorry))Addy backed away, sniffing. "As if I had a choice! Spirits stay wherever they spent most of they're life," She said miserably. "And that place was here." She started to cry again. Addy lifted off the ground. "I shouldn't even have come here in the first place!" She wailed, not meaning the drama. "But those stupid white men will believe anything!" She bawled, sitting in the rafters.
Callisto crossed her arms. "Spirit or not," she said irritably,"Stop your bawling and help me with dishes. Good Lord knows I could use another hand 'round these parts." She hummed a small tune from her childhood under her breath, soap bubbles floating towards her head.
She huffed and sniffed, but a small part of her felt happy to be ordered around. Just like old times. "Yes ma'am." She murmured, feeling ashamed for her little scene. She started to scrub a rather large crock pot. "Sorry." She said, genuinely.
"If you're a spirit though,"Callisto pondered, tossing food scraps into the trash,"how come you can do normal things? Seems to me you ought to be doing spooky things, like making banshee noises."
