K.L. Nappier (kl_nappier) | 5 comments Greetings, "Book Nook Cafe,"

K.L. Nappier

My name is Kathy and I write as K.L. Nappier. I hope those of you who are interested in dark literary-style fiction will consider reading and discussing my work. I have three (and soon to be four) for you to explore:

"Full Wolf Moon": Book I of the Full Wolf Moon Trilogy
"Bitten": Book II of the Full Wolf Moon Trilogy
("Chosen": Book III is in progress and not yet released)

Full Wolf Moon

Bitten: Book II of the Full Wolf Moon Trilogy

The Full Wolf Moon Trilogy is three volumes of an historical, supernatural thriller that explores the depths of our fears, whether collective or individual. There is some graphic content -PG in nature; most suitable for 18 years and up- but the plot drives these scenes, not the other way around.

Then there is "Strange Eight," a short story collection of literary-style dark fantasy and speculative fiction. Also PG in nature, many of its stories draw on mythic traditions and images. The stories are a mix of drama and humor.

Strange Eight: Eight Curious Concepts in Speculative Fiction Bundled Into a Compilation That Defies the Norm.

All my work can be sampled at Amazon, Barnes & Noble or SmashWords. I will be happy to provide up to five complimentary copies of a title for a discussion group, whether ebook or paperback. With ebook, I can directly send the title in pdf format or send a SmashWords coupon for downloading. If any discussion members prefer paperback, please message me privately here at GoodReads or via email kathy@klnappier.com with your preferred mailing address.

Many thanks for considering reading me. Best Regards~ Kathy

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) | 686 comments I'm curious whether new books are immediately made into online books, instead of physical books? Would the genre determine that?

message 16: by Alias Reader (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 30000 comments I don't know. Maybe self published books are less expensive to the author to go the e-book way. Not sure. Good question.

message 17: by K.L. (new)

K.L. Nappier (kl_nappier) | 5 comments Hi, Carol,

Today, both self-published ebooks and paperbacks are relatively inexpensive for the writer to produce. Production costs for paperbacks are somewhat more than ebooks, but are still affordable. Below is info based on my own experience:

Producing an ebook to distribute through SmashWords and Kindle (Amazon does not work with SmashWords), costs me nothing until a copy is downloaded. At that point, the distributor takes its percentage.

As with ebooks, paperbacks made and distributed via a company such as CreateSpace or Lulu (I've used both and am currently using CreateSpace) cost the author nothing until a reader orders a book. At that time, the company takes its percentage. When a writer orders author/personal copies, s/he pays a flat price for those copies. For example, one of my books costs me approx. $5 per copy when I order. I also have to figure in shipping & taxes. So when I sell a paperback for $12 to $15 -depending on the title- I can make a reasonable profit.

There are also costs to consider prior to distribution such as editorial services and cover art design, unless the writer can barter editing services and create his/her own covers. These expenses, of course, are one-time per book, so they can be figured per book based on total annual sales.

Hope that helps. Best ~ Kathy

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) | 686 comments Hi, Kathy,

Thank you for your help. I have a friend who wrote a trilogy using CreateSpace, and was very pleased with the outcome. I will check it out when I get to that stage.

Are hard copy books still published? Or is the cost too great? Or is it meant for those well-known authors?

The reason for my questions is that I am in the "research stage" of a biography of a 19th century female which is the largest project I've ever attempted. In June, I will start traveling to three different states to get all the necessary information I need for the book.

Regarding cover art, design, layout, etc. is not an issue for me. I graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design and Photography, and AA in Communications. I worked for 20+ years for The American Red Cross Blood Services in Marketing, Communications, and Education (writing, editing, marketing campaigns, educational programs, photography, all print publications, and radio.)

Previous to working at The American Red Cross, I owned a subchapter S-corporation, and enjoyed it greatly. But after four years, I liquidated a week before I gave birth to my third child. I decided to spend these early years with them (ages 4, 3 and newborn) before they grew up. It was the best thing I ever did.

Thanks Kathy.
Carol

K.L. Nappier (kl_nappier) | 5 comments Sounds like you're ahead of the game with your graphic design degree. Excellent! That's something, btw, that has the potential to add $ to your income as well as save you $. Writers are always on the lookout for quality, affordable cover art.

Regarding hard cover: Lulu.com used to do hardcover and may still. It's been a while since I've used Lulu (though not because I don't like their quality. I've kept my account with them, and am sure I'll revisit them in the future), so I don't know if they still do.

But it seems to me that, nowadays, because of print on demand, there's really no reason not to print both hardcover and paperback simultaneously. Most of your costs are already in the writing, editing and design when you publish in paperback and ebook anyway. Producing a hard cover won't add to those.

As with paperbacks, you'll only pay for the cc's of hardcovers you order directly, and the company you use to produce the hardcover edition doesn't take its percentage of a book sale until a reader buys a cc. So, a hardcover is simply another way to give your readers what they want.

If you're planning to order hardcover-edition author cc's to sell yourself at events, I recommend starting with a small batch to test the waters: 10 to 15. But, don't be discouraged if you only sell one or two at any given event. Event appearances are largely for face time, publicity and audience building, so it may take time for an author to sell books in medium to large numbers at personal appearances. These appearances aren't as much about turning a profit (though it's a thrill when that happens!)as "branding" yourself and your work. But, with your schooling in Communications, that should be a no-brainer for you as well. :)

Good luck, Carol!

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) | 686 comments I'm familiar with author/ book events (but have yet to get a business card). I have been fortunate to meet many authors at The Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, CT. I also did a one day program at Wesleyan Writers Conference in June; i thought I would do the week course after I finish writing my book. My biggest issue was losing my Writer's Group on www.meetup.com. I'm trying to find another group that is not to far away.

Thank you very much Kathy.

Kathy Shuker (kathyshuker) Hi everyone. Hope this is the right place for this! I'm Kathy and my recently published eBook: Deep Water, Thin Ice is now available for a limited time on Kindle Countdown Deals in US/UK.
If your husband kills himself and you didn’t see it coming, wouldn’t you feel guilty and confused? If his cousin is charming and attentive and reminds you forcibly of the man you’ve just lost, wouldn’t you want him in your life? And if your sister – much as you love her – is jealous and controlling, wouldn’t you ignore her warnings that he might not be everything he seems? Alex did. So how long will it take her to realise that she’s making a fatal mistake?
Do take a look and take advantage of this special offer. Fingers crossed that you enjoy it! Deep Water, Thin Ice by Kathy Shuker http://www.amazon.com/Deep-Water-Thin...

Good evening everyone!

My name is Joe, and I just published my first children's book "Hobbs Goblin in The Treasure Adventure". So far I have achieved great success, especially because I just wrote it for my 3 year old son. In 3 weeks I have 19 reviews on Amazon and people are loving it. I admit it is making me quite proud. I wrote and illustrated it myself and it is unique in its structure. It is a first in a series and is meant to have the reader interact with the main character, Hobbs.

I have now started reviewing books as well, since there has been demand for it. That is pretty fun too. I just wanted to introduce myself. Please feel free to friend me and check out my website/blog.

Cheers!

Leonardo Noto (leonardonoto) | 5 comments The Life of a Colonial Fugitive. Free on Nook! http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-l...

What do you do when your commanding officer frames you to conceal his wartime atrocities, when you're literally facing the gallows for crimes that you didn't commit? You run like hell!

Jonathan E. Lee was the idealistic youngest son of an eminent Virginian plantation clan until he made the mistake of following his dashing older brother, "Light Horse Harry" Lee, into the nascent Continental Army. Now standing falsely accused of capital crimes, Jonathan is on the run, fleeing The Colonies for British Canada to save his neck from the hangman's noose. But little does Jonathan know that this is only the first brush with a violent death that he will face in the bitter years to come.

Based in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, "The Life of a Colonial Fugitive" is a fictional, but historically accurate, tale of the globetrotting adventures of Jonathan E. Lee, a member of the esteemed Lee Family of Old Virginia. Follow Jonathan through the upheavals of the American Revolution, in a fratricidal struggle for independence as he fights alongside the militia of the sovereign Republic of Vermont, in a treacherous civil war as a soldier of fortune in the Kingdom of Siam, and finally as a mercenary in America's first foreign war, fighting valiantly against the hated Barbary Pirates of Mediterranean. Settle in to your saddle and grasp the reins, because you're in for a galloping ride!

INTRUSIVE MEMORY is the true story of how I overcame a hellish childhood, pulled my life back together, and realized my dream of becoming a physician. This book is not for the fainthearted. It begins in the mental hospital where I spent much of my childhood after being removed from my home by Child Protective Services, then whirls the reader through a cascade of pathological environments including a violent military school and Mississippi jail. This is the story of how I fought against the odds and against my inner demons to survive, claw my way into medical school, and succeed by graduating in the top of my class!
