CJ (thebookdream) | 47 comments Has anyone bought the new Glowlight Plus? Do you like it? I wasn't interested until I found out it's waterproof (I love reading in the bath) so they have my interest now. My main hang up is that it doesn't support Adobe Digital Editions, but I'm told by the very knowledgeable Nook person at my local B&N that it's an issue that's being worked on.

Any thoughts?

Karen (2noelle) I saw it in person and thought it was ok. I like that it's waterproof and can be read in the tub safely. I still own the simple touch and Nook HD+. I really don't know if it's specs are enough for me to take the plunge especially since they aren't allowing any trade ins for the NGL+ I'm really waiting for some reviews to come out to really decide.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments I'm also in the fence with this one - I haven't purchased a new Nook since the Nook HD - and I think I want a new Nook but not sure if this is the one to go for. I have not seen it yet and before this one came out I was toying with getting on of the Samsungs - I'm so confused and nit sure what to do!!!

Karen (2noelle) I don't like the samsung tablets, I think the Nook HD (+) is a superior Nook experience. I don't need a camera, so I gave mine to my husband. I love the HD+ and hate that BN didn't brand another tablet.

CJ (thebookdream) | 47 comments I too prefer my Nook HD and when it breaks will jump ship to another tablet company.
The glowlight is a new e-reader not tablet. Didn't like it too much in person until I saw that it was waterproof. Then the design issues I had with it made sense.

message 6: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments I'm surprised that the big deal for this one is that it is waterproof. That is not really important to me, I have never read in the tub. I think I will go and see it in person.

message 7: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mgauffant) | 86 comments I read a lot pool side, so this is a definite plus for me. I'm also waiting for some reviews.
I use my simple touch by the pool and am always scared I'll drop it in by mistake.

message 8: by Thera (new)

Thera Lewis (thera1) | 124 comments The waterproof factor is a non-issue for me. I don't read in the tub (too busy drinking wine and relaxing), and I don't read poolside (too busy swimming). Lol.
The main reason I want this one is my current nook is old, I hate kindles interface, and I hate tablets to read on.
So this is the one for me.

The waterproofing would be great for me, but not using ADE is pretty much a dealbreaker. I borrow a lot of library books.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments I finally got a chance to swing by a Barnes and Noble to check out this device, I didn't get a chance to talk to anyone about it, but I was expecting the glow plus to be a larger device, it appears that way on line, but it is not large at all, I think it is the same size as the original. I need to know what the "pluses" are other than being waterproof.

The Glowlight+ will be $99 for Black Friday. As will the smaller Samsung.

message 12: by CJ (new)

CJ (thebookdream) | 47 comments Pluses (as I understand them): You just swipe the N button to operate (I don't see that as a plus, but they tell me it is), better screen, access to the new B & N Readouts feature. I think the lighting is better designed on this one, but I'm not sure.

Thera Lewis (thera1) | 124 comments My mom let the cat out of the bag, and told me she's getting me one for Christmas. So I'll know more once I get it and use it for awhile. But I do like the way it feels in my hand when I checked one out in the store.

Very tempted, but unless they've worked out the ADE and sideloading issues, it would make no sense for me. I don't buy books from B&N.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments What issues are you having Willaful?

That is a great deal, but now I don't know what to do. I have been on the fence for a while regarding the Nook for Samsung tablet - I like Samsung products but haven't used one in several years since I switched to the IPhone.

I don't have one, but the reports are that it doesn't work with ADE and that sideloading has a lot of problems.

message 18: by Thera (new)

Thera Lewis (thera1) | 124 comments I just got the glowlight plus yesterday. I was able to side load all my books very easily using Calibre. Plug into my computer, open Calibre and voilá.
As for ADE, I can't say. I haven't used ADE in ages.

I just got a new Glowlight (after losing my Simple Glowlight) and there are a few things that really bug me about it. Hopefully, someone can help point me to a workaround.

1. Turning on the light is kind of a pain. The old glowlight let me just long press the NOOK button and the light turned on. Now, I have to go to settings.

2. Adding epubs from Calibre. I have a number of (DRM-free) epubs in my calibre library that I would like to be able to read on the Nook. The old Simple Glowlight let me just add the epubs and they displayed with the rest of my library. With the new Glowlight, while I *can* read them, the behavior is just like the original Nook (the one with 3G): they not only have to be placed into "files" or "documents" folders, but they only show up if I navigate to the "my files" section of the library and not in "all". Also, the covers don't show up on the new one! Just a rectangle with the title inside as text.

any ideas on how to make the new Glowlight Plus behave like the old Simple Touch Glowlight??? Does B&N have any plans to bring back the Simple Touch Glowlight???

Patricia | 2 comments got it for xmas but havent opened it yet , I have a question, with this new one could i have kindle account on it? i know for samsung nook (which I hate I actually brought mine back when i first got it) they have kindle through play store

message 23: by CJ (new)

CJ (thebookdream) | 47 comments No. The Glowlight Plus is an e-ink reader with no Play store access. It can't read Kindle files (unless it's DRM free and you convert it. But DRM free doesn't happen very often on Amazon.)

message 24: by Thera (new)

Thera Lewis (thera1) | 124 comments You can always add the covers in caliber, if your book is missing them.
And my side loaded books are listed with all my other books in the same place. I'm not sure what's going on with that.
As for the light issue, I'm also trying to figure out an easier way.

CJ (thebookdream) | 47 comments Well, I just bought one (I now have enough Nooks to furnish my entire house. What do you call a herd of Nooks anyways?) So I guess you'll hear my take on it soon. I'm sure the home button will annoy me but the waterproof feature won out

FYI Christa, you can edit your message after posting it... just look in the bottom right corner of the message.

Cathy (book_worm_mama) | 2 comments I have it and it's nice, but you can't change the size of the font with it...so I do end up going back to my regular glow light from time to time.

message 29: by CJ (new)

CJ (thebookdream) | 47 comments Yeah that REALLY surprised me. All the other books have this feature. Why go backward on something so basic?

message 30: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Thompson | 1 comments You can change the font size. Touch the center of the page on your book. In the upper right corner you'll see "Aa". Touch that and it will bring up font options. If you touch the battery icon instead of "Aa", you'll bring up quick settings to turn the light on and off.

message 31: by Julie (new)

Julie I really like the NGP. I borrow lots of library books thru overdrive. While it isn't as easy as borrowing a Kindle ebook, it is still pretty easy. I have a Mac and had to download Android file transfer app first to allow me to get the books onto my Nook. I can't say that I love the glow light part of this Nook. I don't like the bluish tint and it does have shadows alone the very top of the screen. However, the main reason I bought this device, is for reading when boating, (waterproof)and haven't needed the glow light for that. Reading in sunny situations has been exceptional on the Nook, and I like that I don't have to worry about a little water spray hitting the device anymore.I also own a kindle Voyage that I adore and prefer it's lighting in low light situations. I always have 2 books going now. The Nook during morning and daytime reading, and the Kindle before bed.
I do want to mention one thing. When I got the first nook home and set it up, I noticed a very small little "hole" that allowed much more light thru. It wasn't actually a hole but some sort of spot that seemed to not have the same finish of the rest of the screen. It was right in the center and when the glowlight was turned up, was extremely distracting. Even tho I didn't plan to use this as often in lowlight situations, there will be times that I can't put a book down, and will be using it, plus I wondered if this spot could grow bigger, so the next morning I took it to the store to ask for an exchange. The young lady there, while not being blatantly rude told me that the product wasn't defective and that she had seen this before and these "spots" are normal and that this is not something they normally take back a device for, because I just made this Nook "unsellable". There was an awkward silence, and then she said she would make an exception for me, since I had come to the store but that she would be "flagging" this transaction. I stayed polite and said that I didn't even know what that meant, and that if I am willing to support B&N and hand over a good chunk of hard earned dollars, I don't think I'm being unreasonable to expect a perfectly intact product right out of the box, and where would I be if I had waited longer than the return window and this spot DID become bigger? I seriously debated dropping the exchange and getting my money back, but I do like the device and still want to see B&N succeed. I gotta say tho, it was an extremely uncomfortable interaction, and it makes me want to avoid walking into their brick and mortar store again. As much as I hate to see Any one business take over, it's never been anything but pleasant dealing with returns through Amazon. I always get off the phone wishing I got the operator's address so I could send him/her a Christmas card. I felt like I was being accused of something sinister at this store.
Anyway, to finish on an up note, Im blowing through books on my new Nook, and I love it! I also love how it looks and feels. I did purchase a cover for it but it adds very little bulk. I would recommend this nook for the price. And I just want to tell people that they CAN borrow library books onto this device with a Mac.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments I think I have all of the Nooks but my go to Nook at the moment is Nook HD. I was thinking of purchasing the Nook Glowlight Plus - i want to purchase it because of the e-ink technology and I think it is the only Nook that has their operating system. And to help with eye strain. For those of you that has this one do you like it? Do you think it is worth the money??? I would really love to hear your thoughts guys.

message 33: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Friedrichsen | 7 comments My Nook Glowlight Plus will be delivered tomorrow, and I'm hoping I didn't make a mistake in trading in my Nook Simple Touch for it. The Simple Touch has been having a few problems lately, which I'm not sure are with it or Adobe DE, so I decided to see if I could trade it in. You can, but it's not advertised on the website very well. I had to contact customer service for that and they told me how to do it. Anyway, what I'm excited about on the Glowlight Plus is the water-and-dust proofing, as I sometimes take it on trips to very dusty areas, and the glowlight feature. With the Simple Touch I had to buy a book light in order to use it at night, which is nice and bright but is just cumbersome. I've been reading about some of the problems that have been fixed, so I'm hoping mine will work just fine for library books, which it what I mostly read on it. I'm also hoping B&N will keep supporting this one for quite a while, since they've quit updates to the Simple Touch. I really like the ereaders better than tablets to read on. I have an Amazon Fire that I used for one library book, but it was very distracting and not as easy on the eyes.

CJ (thebookdream) | 47 comments The only complaints I have with the Nook Glowlight Plus is that it occasionally goes haywire and keeps closing any books you open. When it does that, it's a pain in the ass. Also, side loaded books can't be sorted into folders.
It's heavier than any other e-ink Nooks. Other than those three issues I love it. I'm charging it up for my bath right now! Loooooove the water proof feature.

message 35: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Friedrichsen | 7 comments I haven't had it do that, but the other day it kept going back and forth between pages when I tapped on the right side of the screen to go forward. After a few times of that it did actually move forward in the book again. The only other thing it's done so far is after the latest update the time is off by 4 to 12 hours if I'm not connected to wifi. B&N says the way to fix it is to reset, but I don't want to do that yet. Maybe if it really starts to bug me I will. Otherwise I'm really liking it, and will probably buy a clear shell just for a little better grip.

message 36: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Friedrichsen | 7 comments Has anybody had problems with your computer not recognizing the Glowlight Plus? I reset mine after finishing a library book the other day to try to straighten out the time issue, and now it won't connect to any computer. I tried it on mine and my brother's. Should I try resetting it again and see if it fixes itself? I really like it, but my computer won't recognize it's even plugged in, except that it still charges it.

message 37: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Friedrichsen | 7 comments Apparently my NGLP is defective. I reset it again and tried plugging it into another computer and still nothing. Barnes & Noble is sending me a new one. Hope this one works great!

Andrea Friedrichsen | 7 comments Thanks Linda! My new one works great. It still has the time issue when it's not connected to Wifi, but I'm ignoring it. Otherwise it works perfectly.
