The House of Hades by Rick Riordan is a book I would recommend for people who are interested in fictional Greek mythology. I personally like reading this type of mythology, and I think it’s a good read. This book is about a group of friends traveling the world, and some traveling Tartarus, to get to the Doors of Death and close them.
In the beginning, Frank, Hazel, Nico, Jason, and Leo are all on their ship, which can fly, trying to find their way through the mountains. Monsters conjured by Gaea, were continuously trying to stop them, no matter which path they took. Rocks were hurled at them from the mountain ridges, of which they couldn’t see until it was almost too late. When Hazel asks her dad, Pluto, for help, Arion (her horse who can run on any surface) shows up and takes her to one of the hills to meet Hecate. Hecate told her that in order to survive the Doors of Death that she needed to learn how to control the Mist. She provided Hazel and her friends a safe route through the mountains, but it was a 400 mile detour. In order to get through the mountains, they needed this, so they had no choice but to take it.
In the middle of the book, Hazel and her friends arrive in Venice. After docking, they discovered monsters that ate poisonous plants, and when they were surrounded by the monsters for accidentally touching their food, Hazel was hit directly in the face by their poison breath. She lay in the black house, dying, while Frank killed all of the monsters in Venice so his father, Mars, will provide him with a snake. He is successful in doing this, and when he returned to the house, Hazel was cured. Near the end, they finally reached the Doors of Death, and only half of them made it to the actual Doors, the other half got stuck in a chamber somewhere in the House of Hades, only to make it to the Doors after Hazel’s battle was over and Percy and Annabeth were safe. Hazel had to fight Pasiphae, an evil sorceress, but is trapped in a maze, and by manipulating the Mist, she can make the maze go wherever she wants. This is how she beats Pasiphae.
I personally like this book, and would recommend it to anybody who likes fictional Greek mythology, but I’d also recommend that you read the Percy Jackson series first, so you have a better understanding of what is going on. You will also understand why Percy and Annabeth are in Tartarus, and how they got there.
