Anne | 143 comments I wonder, does anyone know the book for January? I noticed the Stephen King on the group's front page but that book is in June. Thanks.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17003 comments Anne: Good question! We haven't selected a January book yet, any suggestions? We will usually start a poll for the group to decide.

message 3: by Anne (new)

Anne | 143 comments Thanks, Ann. Ooh, I'll nominate the new Tess Gerritsen 'Playing with Fire'. It only came out last week and it's a stand-alone novel. Haven't read it yet but it's on my pile :)

message 4: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17003 comments I think that sounds like a great nomination Anne! Tess Gerittsen is a favorite and we like group reads to be stand alones where possible.

BarryP (barrypz) | 3504 comments 'll toss my hat in for Christopher Buckley "The Relic Master".

message 6: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17003 comments Barry: I'm not familiar with The Relic Master: A Novel, I'll look it up. Ahh now that does look interesting,a comic adventure novel.
I'll add The Grown Up by Gillian Flynn to Anne's previously mentioned Playing with Fire for possible group read books.

Hmm. Nothing like a good "Shroud of Turin" yarn.

I've never read any Christopher Buckley, although I did see a movie based on one of his novels, Thank You for Smoking. I guess Relic is as good a place to start as any.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9521 comments Ann, the Flynn story sounds intriguing. Very different from Gone Girl and Dark Places.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9521 comments Anne, I read the description of this and it wasn't anything like I expected! I think it also is a good nomination.

Shomeret | 1496 comments I'm waiting for Playing with Fire from the library. I'm #2 on the hold list. So I'm hoping to get it relatively soon and I would join the discussion for it if it's our January pick.

I was surprised too. Really looking forward to reading it. Hope it's a good one.:) I was also surprised by it being less than 300 pages.

message 12: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17003 comments I am excited about all of the books mentioned so far and hope we can do all three of them - perhaps stretching them out across the next few months. I'll start a poll to call attention to them and go ahead and add Playing with Fire to our to read shelf with four of us already planning to read it.

message 13: by Amy (new)

Amy | 1346 comments I reserved it at library.

message 14: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9521 comments I've missed the last couple of group reads but hope to join back in on this one. Just reserved the audio from the library and it looks like there are 3 holds on 9 copies so I should get it right away.

message 15: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17003 comments Carol: sounds good! I need to go see where I am on the holds list.

Playing with Fire is on top of my library TBR pile. So it's up next. This means I'll have it read before January.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17003 comments Shomeret: If you or anyone else has the chapter structure to help me make the group read posting threads I will appreciate your insight. Thanks!

Playing With Fire has 21 chapters plus Historical Notes. The Historical Notes are at the end which is the best place for them since they are likely to contain spoilers.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17003 comments Thanks for the chapter details Shomeret! Historical notes sound intriguing.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17003 comments Barry: Are you still interested in The Relic Master: A Novel as a group read?
Does anyone else have any suggestions for a new Group Read book poll?

message 21: by BarryP (new)

BarryP (barrypz) | 3504 comments I'll be reading the book either way, but if there is not a ton of interest, not worth writing the summaries.

message 22: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17003 comments Agreed, I have reserved it from the library and my turn may be mid January.

message 23: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9521 comments I'm afraid I'll have to pass on The Relic Master: A Novel, too far behind on my reading, but I look forward to hearing how it is.

message 24: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17003 comments Carol: Maybe something on your tbr pile would be a good group read book!
Anyone have something on their must read list for a January / February discussion book?

message 25: by BarryP (new)

BarryP (barrypz) | 3504 comments Don't worry, you'll get my 2 cents whether you want it or not.

message 26: by Anne (new)

Anne | 143 comments I have so many tbr:) I'll offer a few just in case the group has read them already.
'The Woman who Walked in Sunshine' McCall Smith (2015) Lady Detective Agency 16
'Splinter the Silence' McDermid (2015) Hill/Jordan book 9
(Though both of these are the latest in a series, I think you can still read them out of order - I've only read book 8 of Hill/Jordan and it was fine. )
'Black Echo' Connelly (2012) first Harry Bosch

I've just started a discussion / group and wanted to invite you in case you're interested. It's for book clubs and authors with the aim of creating a forum for the two to meet:

Ann (annrumsey) | 17003 comments Thanks for the suggestions, Anne! I think some here have read earlier books in the series suggestions. Let's see if there are a couple of folks with interest. I'll check them out tomorrow!
