HRC Ravenclaw Common Room discussion
What are you reading?
I read Sherlock years ago, good read. I'm currently not reading because all of my spare time is being taken up by writing for NaNoWriMo, so I'm looking forward to this group!
I'm am currently reading Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I'm enjoying it, but I don't think it will end up on my list of favorites. As soon as I finish that, I'll be reading Ruin by John Gwynn which is the 3rd book in The Faithful and the Fallen series. I'm excited to get into this book because it is a really great fantasy series that isn't in the YA category which can be hard to find these days! Not that I don't enjoy a good YA fantasy series, but sometimes I want something more complex. I listen to audio books and podcasts at work every day. I just finished Career of Evil. I had mixed feelings about it. I'm still considering how I will rate it. I haven't chosen my next audio book, but am leaning toward the All the Stats in the Sky (3rd book in the Until the End of the World series).
Just started reading Red Rising by Pierce Brown. I am absolutely captivated! I highly recommend this book and I'm only 1/3 of the way through it!

I'm in the middle of The Road. Being a post-apocalyptic FANATIC I thought I would really enjoy this. However, the writing is weird... hard to make it through. And it's actually not THAT interesting... I mean, at certain points I get really into it, but I'm disappointed it's not as good as I thought it was gonna be.
Heather wrote: "Just started reading Red Rising by Pierce Brown. I am absolutely captivated! I highly recommend this book and I'm only 1/3 of the way through it!"that's been on my TBR list FOREVER! I can't wait to read it!
I've been meandering through Neil Gaiman's "Trigger Warning: Short Stories and Other Disturbances" for a few months. I love all the stories. It's a good pick-up book between books. I finished "The Husband's Secret" recently, as well.
Just finished In a Dark, Dark Wood (pretty great), The Misadventures of the Family Fletcher, and The Old Willis Place (I'm a 5th grade teacher). Next up, Bone Gap (for me), and Under the Egg (for the kids). Also, the 3rd Mo & Dale mystery, characters from Three Times Lucky (sadly, really for me, since most of my kids haven't read the first 2!) and I have Ghettoside lurking in my pile. Yeah.
I recently started Depraved Heart by Patricia Cornwell. So far, so good, but I haven't read many of the Scarpetta series that I haven't enjoyed.
I've just finished another William Johnstone western. I love westerns and sometimes feel like I was born in the wrong century.
A Tine to Live a Tine to die by Edith M Msxwell it a cozy mystery not my favorite but its different.
I just finished reading Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief with my boys. Next we're starting the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book. I've recently started listening to the audiobook The Killing Lessons by Saul Black. I always listen to the audiobooks in my car. Plus, I always have a book, or my Nook with me at all times.
I just finished The Hypnotist's Love Story, which I really liked! Now reading Ghost Story for my Book Club. So far it's not what I expected (no ghosts!) but I only just started, so we'll see.
I am reading some old Lovecraft and Poe short story collections while impatiently waiting for my husband to finish reading the Rick Riordan series after Percy Jackson.
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory. It's captivating, but I have a soft spot for historical fiction (:
I loved Red Rising and Golden Son. If you have not read The Martian, highly recommend it.
Red Queen is pretty good dystopian YA novel, as well.
Currently, I'm reading Fiery Cross (Outlander #5)

Sandra wrote: "I just started reading "Legend" by Marie Lu. I like it so far!"oh man, that's probably one of the best books I've ever read. *thumbs up*
I've just finished the third book in the Miss Peregrine's/Peculiar Children series (Library of Souls), and moved on to our book club book, The Book of Lost Things! I am traveling for work over the next few days and thought it'd make for a good plane read :-)
I just finished the 5th book in the Game of Thrones series. Now I'm waiting with the rest of the world for book 6. Moving into the classic A Tree Grows in Brooklyn while I wait for The Book of Lost Things to get into my library.
Does anyone know if there is a way to share our list of "want to reads"? I would really like to be able to share it with those asking for Christmas gift ideas, but I haven't seen anything... :(
Book of Lost Things was started Sunday on a plane. I'm about a third of the way through the unabridged Les Miserables. Reading Sorcerer's Stone with my youngest son (while the other two pretend they're not listening, too). Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander #2) is my current guilty pleasure when I can have a cup of tea and a quiet room.
Devin, I keep a list of books I would like in a note (in your profile, by photos and stuff). Anytime anyone asks for suggestions I send them the link. You can also tag people in comments. I also keep in parenthesis when I last updated my list, make sure to update it especially before birthday and holidays.

Hey Salli, I've looked and looked for a place to create any type of note, and I just can't seem to find it. Can you maybe help point me in the right direction? Maybe we need to suggest to Goodreads that they create a way for us to share our list of "to-reads" as a link with anyone, whether they have goodreads or are our friend on goodreads or not!
Does anyone else read three books at a time? I usually read several at a time or one book in 48hours. Is this unusual?
I'm definitely one of those, Tracey (: I'm reading "the Egypt Game", "the Book of Lost Things", and "the Angel Makers". Plus I got sucked into "the Constant Princess" as an audio book.
I am definitely I one book at a time. I really focus on the characters and fall into the story. (I think it is my coping mechanism!). And I can finish a book in just a couple of days!
I read five or more book at a time. I love starting new books and I have lots of books going because I might be in the mood for a mystery or a romance or non-fiction. By reading five books at a time I am always reading something I am interested in.
Tracey, I used to read as many as five or six books at one time (my mother used to get so exasperated because they would all sneak their way out onto the counter as I read a different one with each snack/solitary meal). Now, I usually only read 2-3 books at one time, and usually only one of those is one I haven't read, before. I'm also guilty of starting a new book/series and not stopping until I've finished - often at the cost of my sleep!Currently, I just finished "The Book of Lost Things", and am re-reading "House of Many Ways" for the hundredth (or so) time. Thinking of picking up one of the Thursday Next novels, again (also for around the hundredth time) as well.
Shanda wrote: "I just finished reading Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief with my boys. Next we're starting the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book. I've recently started listening to the audiobook The Killing Less..."I am so ashamed that I haven't read any Percy Jackson yet. I have them all on my e-reader and I think I'm going to sit down this Christmas break and go through as many as I can!
I just picked up "The Testing" by Joelle Charbonneau. I'm only 2 chapters deep but I'm intrigued as to where the story will go!!

I'm reading a couple of books at the moment which is pretty rare for me. I'm reading "Bad Feminist," "The Water is Wide," and I'm listening to "Dataclysm." After this I think I'm going to need a break from nonfiction. Even though I love it!
I always have a handful of books I'm reading at one time, I like have different people to spend my time with. Right now I am currently on the last pages of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, I must say I love it!! I am also reading Cinder, Lux: Origins, Ravens Boys and of course Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. I read Harry Potter every Holiday season but I'm a bit behind this season.
For anyone interested in a book challenge similar to the PopSugar challenge check out this group:https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...
I am currently reading Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
I just read the first Case Histories book by Kate Atkinson. I picked it up while shopping for our RC book and it made me read it. I liked it, I'm a fan of the show too (Jason Isaacs
I am currently going through my re-reading of the Harry Potter series, currently on The Goblet of Fire but once I finish this I will switch to the The Martian Chronicles then back to Harry then back to something else!
I just finished reading Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. It's a great post apocalyptic book for those who like those kind of books. I am currently reading Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick which is about North Korea. Very interesting so far.
New here, last book of 2015 was the Martian, GREAT BOOK for a nerdy engineer like me. It actually was so good for me that it jumped to my number one favorite book of all time, taking the spot from Redwall (Brian Jacques) that held the number one for almost 15 years.I started 2016 with The Killer Angels (Michael Shaara) which had been on my list for WAY too long.
I'm currently 60 pages into Elantris, Brandon Sanderson's first novel and am loving it so far (I'm a HUGE fan of his Mistborn trilogy.
After that I will catch up with this book club since I just joined haha
Chris
Welcome Chris!
I am 2 chapters in on The Witches and I am sadly not that impressed. I feel like I want to stop the author and quote the mad hatter,"Start at the beginning, and when you come to the end, stop." She's all over the place. In a bad way. Hopefully it will be more linear in the following chapters.

I recently started a couple of separate boards for music non-fiction - classical, jazz, and musical theatre. My "professional development" reading, as it were. :)
Nicole wrote: "Now, I usually only read 2-3 books at one time, and usually only one of those is one I haven't read, before..."I'm usually reading one fiction and one non-fiction at a time (since the latter can usually go slower or be more easy to pause). The exceptions are when I take a quick break - usually a reread - but almost always something I can power through in a day or so.
I'm currently "reading" Winter of the World, by Ken Follett (Book 2 of the Century Trilogy). I'm actually listening to it, which is quite a big project - 25 CDs, by far the longest audiobook I've ever dealt with! It's a great one, though.I need to get started on Memoirs of a Geisha, though.
I'm currently hitting up The Book of Unknown Americans. It's excellent so far! I'll dig into Geisha after that.
Finished Geisha and now I'm back to The Witches (Stacy Schiff). The narrative is slowly starting to make more sense but there are SO many people who are players in the story I want to make little paper dolls of them or something to have a more visual as to who is who and related to whom.

I'm more than half way through volume one of The Complete Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I love it! Then again, I'm pretty biased. I just love it when fictional British people kill each other. ;)
