My Dad preached on this chapter of Ecclesiastes and from that sermon me and him would copy this line from it, "Vanity of Vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity." V2. Now this chapter is a very deep one.
This man (many believe is Solomon) has searches for wisdom and knowledge and here in this book he is gonna tell us what he found out. Here is says that all things in the world is simply vanity and therefore useless and what life's point is is serving God. That is the meaning. This is very hard to understand that all is vanity. However, a very key point in this chapter. ((:

Also y'all, in my Bible the name is stated "Ecclesiastes or the Preacher." Not exactly sure why.

@Luba- Hehe yeah. We read one chapter a day and you can talk about it here that day ((;

@Monica- Aw good ((: Such a great verse there!!

message 31: by Ravanna Dee (new)

Ravanna Dee (ravannadee) Okay so I just got done reading the second chapter, and I was wondering what you all think about this verse.

Ecclesiastics 2:26- For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travel, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Matt Hart | 148 comments Ravanna wrote: "Okay so I just got done reading the second chapter, and I was wondering what you all think about this verse."

For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight [to a good man, this is what God gives] wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner [to a man who is not good in God's sight] he giveth travel, to gather and to heap up, [God gives that sinner the work of storing up worldly goods] that he may give to him that is good before God. [God gives those worldly goods, collected by the sinner, to the other man who is Good in His sight]. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit. [The collection of worldly things and the loss of them by the hand of God, and perhaps even the good man's possession of those by His hand, is also pointless.]

Timothy | 443 comments Signing in. . . I read the first chapter. . . I always did take particular interest in the last verse.

1599 Geneva Bible Notes:

1:18 For in much wisdom is much (m) grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

(m) Wisdom and knowledge cannot be come by without great pain of body and mind: for when a man has attained the highest, yet is his mind never fully content: therefore in this world is no true happiness.

Sorry for the absence. I have been busy working upon a Paperback and Hardcover edition of my Sonnets. Also doing some electrical repairs. . . So, I can finally begin participating on Ecclesiastes!

This book, when I was very young, depress'd me sore. I read a bit of it in the NIV which renders Vanity of vanities to Meaningless, meaningless. . .

Now, as with Psalms or Proverbs, I find this book to be a blessing to read. Thank thee for starting this topic. I look forward to reading this, and my family and I are reading Psalms each day, so it is all the more wonderful! Blessings to thee,

~Timothy

Oh Psalms is a blessed book! Love that one! ((:

Thank you Timothy!! Stay blessed :D

Ecclesiastes 3 ((:

message 41: by Timothy (new)

Timothy | 443 comments Ec 2:26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

1599 Geneva Bible Notes:

3:1 To every thing there is a (a) season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

(a) He speaks of this diversity of time for two causes first to declare that there is nothing in this world perpetual: next to teach us not to be grieved, if we have not all things at once according to our desires, neither enjoy them so long as we would wish.

Ec 3:2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

Ec 3:3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

Ec 3:4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

Ec 3:5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

Ec 3:6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

Ec 3:7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

Ec 3:8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Ecclesiastes 4 ((:

message 44: by Timothy (new)

Timothy | 443 comments Ec 4:9 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

Ec 4:10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

Ec 4:11 Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?

Ec 4:12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

message 45: by Mona (new)

Mona (monna8) Ec 5:1 Keep thy foot whe thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.

Ec 5:2 Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few

Ec 5:3 For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fools voice is known by multitude of words.

Ec 5:4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools; pay that which thou hast vowed.

Ec 5:5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.

Ec 5:6 Suffer not thy mouth to cause they flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?

Ec 5:7 For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.

message 46: by Timothy (new)

Timothy | 443 comments 1599 Geneva Bible Notes:

5:8 If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, wonder not at the matter: for he that is (f) higher than the highest regardeth; and there are higher than they.

(f) Meaning, that God will address these things, and therefore we must depend on him.
