This section covers the 10th Clara chapter through to the end of the book. The first sentences of the section are:

The day of the ambush began with light rains. Her son’s army had reached the river the day before, and the trees that grew around the long, slow water seemed to speak in soft voices full of sharp consonants as the raindrops hit the leaves.

Suzanne | 1582 comments In this section, I keep thinking about the American financial system and when we switched from a gold-based to a paper and promises-based economy. I'm not quite done yet - but I'm close!

Lindsay | 546 comments It's a fascinating concept isn't it: it's like MAD using monetary policy.

Suzanne | 1582 comments It really is - and its kind of the ultimate pyramid scheme. I had no idea when I started this series that it was so aptly named.

I love the economics of this book. Fantasy and economics. Go figure..

Lindsay | 546 comments There's some irony in Barriath's to pose as Callon Cane plan because Clara finds out that the Antean army has a secret way of getting into the Sura-sur-Mar, so she goes to that city to warn him. And then there's this:
The man turned. His face was bloodless, pale, and aghast. Clara felt the world shift beneath her.

“Mother?” Barriath said, sweeping the wide hat from his head. “What are you doing here?”
Clara ends up reuniting Barriath and Jorey and turning Jorey to her side. She then decides to go to Northcoast to try and meet up with Citrhin.

Cithrin has to face the music with the Medean bank, and while they recognize the opportunity that this has given them, they're also not thrilled that the most junior member of the bank is committing them to this sort of thing. But the die is cast, so Komme gets behind Cithrin. He notes at the end of the book that Cithrin has economically conquered half the world with this plan and Geder has the other half through force of arms and magic.

Basrahip lets Geder know that he needs many more priests. This isn't followed up on in this book, but you can see how this could be bad ...

In Northcoast a splinter group of the spider cult appears and tries to enlist King Tracian. Fortunately Marcus and Inys are on the ball.

Coin...and Dagger!

Bill | 1596 comments Does Karol end up being the dagger? Because I am not sure that it is Gedar.

Lindsay | 546 comments Geder has conquered half the world through a combination of force of arms and magic. He's the Dagger. Yes, at this point in the book he seems on the precipice.

Cithrin has the other half - except she hasn't really. It's just her clever idea and there are some pretty stark limitations on that sort of power. You can't print money endlessly without collapsing the economy of whatever country you're doing it in.

Neither have unassailable positions.

Bill | 1596 comments Very true on neither having unassailable positions.
