Earthquake Storms: The Fascinating History and Volatile Future of the San Andreas Fault appears to be a sort of history of earthquake science, focusing on the San Andreas, with some analysis of how that complex fault system works and might fail. I don't know when I'll get around to reading it, but it's on my list.
