The underlying assumptions of this quote are that most teenage boys tend to occupy their thoughts on superficial things like sports and approval seeking. It highlights the important of family dynamic and a teenager's role within the family as well.

Though he could spend his days worrying about his life-threatening illness, Joey Cappelletti thinks mostly about the simple pleasures in life and doesn't dwell on what he cannot control.
