Bill The poll is finished. Congrats to our two selected mysteries, The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler and Snow White Must Die by Nele Neuhaus. Seems like a nice mix. The threads should be in place by the 15th to start the discussion. Congrats again.

Well, how do you like that, we're already at the end of the first Quarter of 2014. Nominations for our next group read will be open from today, Mar 30 until April 6 and voting will take place April 7 - 13 2014.

Please read rules below -

General rules for Group Reads

1) If your nomination wins - you will be the discussion moderator.
2) One (1) nomination only per person. Neither self-nominations by authors nor nominations by their respective publishers or publicist will be accepted.

3) Do not cheat or manipulate results. It is not acceptable to create fake accounts to nominate books or vote in polls and it is not acceptable to invite people to the site for the sole purpose of nominating a book or voting for a book in a poll. It is not acceptable to ask for votes or influence the poll in any way. If the moderators feel that a group read poll has been manipulated, the book in question will be disqualified. If the moderators feel that the user(s) are fake accounts, these will be reported to Goodreads for further review.

4) Please do not repeat an author we have read in the last year. Check the bookshelves to see the authors we've read in the past year.
https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...

5) For your nomination please include Title, Author and Link (Use the "add book/author" link at the top of the comment box).

6) Since we are an international group, please check to make sure the book is readily available in more than one format. The last thing we want is to nominate a book that no one can get.

7) Finally, a word about series - the joy or bane of a mystery reader's life! Please consider whether the book you are nominating would be best read by someone who has read all the previous books in the series or can be enjoyed by someone new to the series too.

Good luck with your nominations.

Ron (ronb626) | 3418 comments Once again, I nominate River of Darkness by Rennie Airth.

While the body of work by Mr. Airth probably isn't as impressive as with some authors, River of Darkness can stand with any of them. Really a marvelous read. In fact, the entire trilogy with John Madden as the protagonist, are 1st rate books. Just that River of Darkness is the best of the bunch.

Spoiler alert: If you read River of Darkness you will be hooked on the trilogy. The others are also very good reads. But, River of Darkness is still the better one in my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

message 12: by Gram (new)

Gram | 28 comments River of Darkness by Rennie Airth would also get my vote. The John Madden Trilogy is a marvellous set of mysteries and - as luck would have it - when checking out John Madden's page earlier today on Goodreads, I discovered he has a 4th John Madden book due out in June 2014.

Jannene | 775 comments I would like to nominate Hide and Seek by James Patterson by James Patterson.
Maggie Bradford is on trial for murder -- in the celebrity trial of the decade. As one of the world's best-loved singer-songwriters, she seems to have it all. So how could she have murdered not just one, but two of her husbands? Will Shepherd was Maggie's second husband. A magnificent athlete and film star, he was just as famous. But Will had dark, dangerous secrets that none of his fans could have imagined! that his own wife could never have dreamed of.

Carol | 152 comments Night Filmby Marisha Pessl sounds very intriguing. I've read lots of chatter on Goodreads about it. Some have described it as "creepy" which always gets to me. I always loved creepy mysteries as a kid and I've never grown out of it!

Interested to see if people would like to check this out? I was quite skeptical at first, I am a James Patterson and Lee Child reader, this is a brand new author who has been writing comic strips before but I was absolutely sucked in from the beginning

Lesfleurs - I notice that it was just released as a paperback in Mar of this year and the goodreads page doesn't list any other versions. I'd suggest we wait until later in the year so that everyone would have a chance to get a copy.
