Yeah, too many books and so little time. lol What do you think of the book so far?

However, I'm getting into this story because it deals with so many different perspectives; is the military to blame, is the civilians to blame for the series of murders? Will Jack lose his career? What's going on in this little town? I'm enjoying it more than I care to say (which is obvious).
Denise, what's your opinion?

No you do not have to follow a series to read a book but it often helps.
And yes I too have read many books selected by a group of an author I did not know and enjoyed.
But, in this case I have attempted to read other books by Lee Child and they are not my cup of tea.
So I did not make the decision lightly not to participate in this month's discussion.
I read over 100 books a year for pleasure - where over half of the authors are new to be.
So I am very open to reading books by authors I have not read before.
It was a personal decision not to read a 400+ page book by author whose writing style does not appeal to me (after several previous attempts to read his work). So hopefully you will respect my decision.

I am not too far into the book but I am really interested in also knowing the answers to the questions that you raised. Reacher seems like he is going to find himself in a lot of trouble once he gets to this town and starts the investigation.

Ok, I have to hurry and catch up. I had a feeling that it was going to be an interesting case. There were a lot of variables that needed to be kept a secret.

Who do you think the killer may be? Hypothetically, of course. I won't hold you to it. Lol!

Let me read a little more and then I will make a guess. Work is not giving me much time to read this month.

So what book did you read this month? What's it about?

I have read a couple of books so far this month:
A Man's Promise by Brenda Jackson
Second book in a trilogy that is a continuing mystery yet each book focuses on a couple.
A Wanted Woman by Eric Jerome Dickey
Is a roller-coaster ride of heart-stopping, nerve-shattering non-stop exhilarating action as a female assassin is caught-up between two warring gangs in this deadly cat and mouse tale. I found the brutally horrific scenes of torture and gang raping too detailed and uncomfortable.
Under the Frangipani by Mia Couto
Set in Mozambique after their Civil War - uses a mystery storyline to explore the culture with bits of magical realism.
The Keepers of the House by Shirley Ann Grau
This book had all the trademarks of southern literature; sense of tradition and the ties that bind and pull on the characters, the past is strongly present, family and community are important, the sense of the physical setting and imagery, the interactions between the races and the different regions.
The Martian by Andy Weir
A man vs nature survival thriller set on Mars. Mark Watney is an astronaut. It started with the dust storm that holed his suit and nearly killed him, and that forced his crew to leave him behind, sure he was already dead. Now he's stranded millions of miles from the nearest human being, with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive--and even if he could get word out, his food would be gone years before a rescue mission could arrive.
The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
This is my best read of the month so far. A must read if you like fantasy/speculative fiction. A chance meeting between mythical beings takes readers on a dazzling journey through cultures in turn-of-the-century New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life to by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic and dies at sea on the voyage from Poland. Chava is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York harbor in 1899. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire born in the ancient Syrian desert, trapped in an old copper flask, and released in New York City, though still not entirely free. Weaves strands of Yiddish and Middle Eastern literature, historical fiction and magical fable into an original storyline.
The Big Smoke by Adrian Matejka
This was my read for National Poetry month - I am not much of a poetry reader but I really enjoyed this book probably becomes the poems were "plain-spoken" tells the story of Jack Johnson mainly from his pov. This books makes me want to read more poetry :)

Wow...I'm truly behind looking at your listing.....they sound very interesting.

There are a couple more books that are calling my name but pressing work projects is cutting into my reading time - so I am pining away until I get read more than a couple of minutes per day.

I know how that goes. Work always gets in the way of my reading too. lol

I found it interesting that no matter how hard Reacher tried to be a civilian everyone still knew that he was in the Army.

I just knew for sure that those guys were going to beat him up but I learned otherwise. Those two biddies was too nosy for me....lol!

There are days I can't wait to get in the car to listen to my audio books. Then start my reading on kindle while in the house. Sometimes I bring the audio in the house if it gets too good. I understand your dilemma...lol!

Yeah, I thought that too when he told them to come back with more people. lol Those ladies were out of control. They had being nosy down to a science. lol

This author really has mastered the idea of putting the suspicion on various characters as the story unfolds.

Street wise and ruthless...handsome in his own sort of way. Sure of himself without appearing arrogant.

Sergeant Nealey. She had a way of cleaning things up.

I would add that he had a strong sense of right and wrong. He definitely made people pay for the crimes that they committed.

She kept the town operable. She's smart, capable and knows her stuff.
Lethea wrote: "How did you feel about the senator and his son?"
I thought that they were both crazy. I guess people will do anything to protect their image and stay in power.

Yeah, but Child had me doubting her innocence at several points in the book. lol

I don't think it was him but the people he worked with was trying to convince him it was her. I think they were trying to throw him off the track of the commander.

That's the definition of neighborhood watch to the third degree
