In the story, Brian's Winter, Brian spends his time communicating with nature. This book is an alternative ending to Hatchet where Brian isn't saved and instead has to spend a winter in the wilderness. Brian subconsciously realizes that winter is coming because he feels an extra cold gust of wind, or notices animals acting in ways that he hasn't seen before. He communicates with these changes by observing and acting accordingly in preparation to survive the winter in the wilderness. He also has a silent agreement, or so he thinks with the wolves and bears that share his habitat. He watches them hunt, and wander and eventually has an encounter with a bear where he realizes his communication was only one sided. Brian communicates with his only friend, a skunk, by offering food in return for companionship. Ultimately Brian realizes that communicating with nature comes more naturally to him than he originally thought and that it might be something he would miss if he were to leave his new home and rejoin society.
