I explored intercultural consciousness of characters when reading Divergent. Each faction had its own culture: the hippies, the academic, the rebels, the altruists, and the factionless. Tris, the main character has to choice her faction and in doing so, she turns her back on the faction she was raised in. Her journey after this involved the exploration of a new Dauntless faction. She has to negotiate new cultural norms in dress, behavior, and transportation. Tris's cultural negotiation and acclimation serves as a means to unfold the plot for the reader. This was a good read.

I think Tris also explores that struggle to NOT display the dress, behavior, and culture of her old faction. It is difficult to leave the old behind, but even as a Dauntless, she displays the qualities of an Abnegation. She puts others Dauntless before herself, which sometimes creates a conflict with "fitting in" to her new faction. So, I think it is more than adapting to the new faction, but also the process of denying her old faction, especially when she attempts to hide the fact that she is a Divergent.
